Post MotorHeads...GMC Typhoon Answers Please?

Ok guys this is an E I got concerning the 99.5 Lightning.....I have answers for a few of his comments, but can you guys give me any info on the Typhoon? Was it a full sized P/U 1/2 ton? I remember the Syclone but not the Typhoon....let me know your thoughts.....later....thanx....Tybee

"Do not want to start a war, but if Ford's 360 HP claim for the Lightning is
conservative, how come my (or any) unmodified 285HP GMC Typhoon truck will beat a
unmodified new Lightning in the quarter mile or from 0-60mph (5.3 sec/14.2 sec
unmodified)? Could be the AWD (no-if you can get traction, Typhoons are quicker
without AWD). Maybe weight difference (the Ty weights around 2 tons but can carry
five people, does the Lightning weigh 5000 lbs?). Maybe aerodynamics (I think the
Ty's CD is around .42). BTW, how much can a Lightning tow?(: Honestly, Ford should
be commended for building a high performance truck at a fairly reasonable price."

Typhoon was built on the blazer platform, the smaller s-10 sized suv , i thought all sy's & ty's were awd, the "awd" in both were a "comsumable" when it came to racing. ford looked at awd in the 99.5 and decided it wasn't feasable for 30K. most of the sub 4sec 0-60 "stock" cars out there have awd.
imagine being able to floor that chipped 99.5 and getting "no wheelspin". do i hear 12's

Neither have beaten me in the 1/8 mile or at top end. The Syclone could only hold on the my rear bumper in the 1/8 mile. They are beatable on the street also. In most cases it was the launch that got them, they just spin tires-4 all at once.

MRBBQMAN, I thought the Typhoon/Syclone were built on the Safari Van chassis. The Safari chassis was FWD and was easier to turn into AWD than the RWD truck chassis for the S-10. I maybe wrong on this. Anybody?

I am presently looking at a 93 typhoon for $13500. with 81000 miles.I had a 99 lightning but limited passanger space has its drawbacks also to many little problems.I have a 99 4x4 f250 4 door supercab which is a great truck, now I just have to satisfy my need for speed.

The Ty & Sy were both built on the 4X4 S-10 platform. The AWD came by changing the transfer case. The new transfer case had a viscus coupling. This would allow the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds. It is the same system used in the Bravada. BTW most of the really fast Ty & Sy's remove the front drive and run slicks on the rear. This frees up some of the power that would have been lost to the front drivetrain. As a mater of fact there is a Eagle Talon down the street from me that has been converted to rear drive only w/12 bolt chevy rear axle and a longitudnaly mounted engine (still the Mitsu 2.0)and a power glide. Last I heard it went mid 9's, and he's shooting for 8.90. I'll be seeing him later to dyno my car and truck (he has a rather nice shop).

I owned a 92 syklon, personally thought it was a maintenance nightmare. Furthermore, the payload was non-existent even for a small truck. It was indeed based on the s-10 4x4 frame.

The one thing I could say was that the truck was FAST. However, it was also extremely light, and I found that with the power, it was skittish even with the AWD.

Good luck to you on purchasing a used one.
