Thumbs up Bye Bye PI Torque converter Hello Navigator Converter

First off I am not blasting the Precision Industries , as this Torque Converter has been in 3 transmissions and was almost 4 years old. However it has never been my favorite mod for the street, I didn't like the fact that with the 2400 stall I lost some throttle response when driving on the street.

So when it started acting up recently, I called Jim and asked him about getting my PI 2400 rebuilt and changing it to a lower stall. He told me he had a Lincoln Navigator Converter that he had tried in his black truck as a experiment, and it might be just what I am looking for. Since it is a 2000 stall converter, I decided to give it a try.

So I got the Navigator Converter installed today, and my initial impression makes me think I made a good choice. However it has been raining and it will take a few days to give you my final opinion. What I can tell you it has improved the throttle response, especially when cruising at about 45-50 mph.

I will let you know how I like it after a few days, but so far I like it much better than the PI. I am going to get the PI rebuilt, and probably lower its stall and keep it as a spare

Keep us updated. I'm in the market for a converter now, and really like the idea of keeping the throttle response on the street. If you get a chance can you compare 60' times.

Also what symptoms let you know that your conveter is going bad?

Well I only have one or two events left this year, and my slicks are about shot. I don't plan on getting new slicks till next season, so it might be hard to get a good read on 60" times till then.

It was starting to make more noise than it normally did, and it was locking and unlocking a little weird the past month or so.

If you do decide to go with a Navigator converter makes sure you call Jim. There are two different coverters in the Navigator. One is no good for our trucks. He has the right part number.

The navigator converters (1L7Z-7902-BA) will not fit a lightning without a flywheel or you can re-cover it, ity's a 4 bolt converter, as are all non S/C 5.4 converters.
I've been doing these for years for Gen 1s, not a bad converter.

When I worked at JDM Jim actually threw this idea to me for my truck several years ago becuase I wanted to do a converter. So, Jim has known about this for a long time and I'm glad it's working well for you Don. Great find Jim!!

Talking

Got to drive it around on dry roads, wow this thing kicks some A$$

The throttle respoce is so much better, maybee it is just the old converter was on it's way out, but I don't think so.

You give it some gass and it just takes off,

I think I am going to like it, I will let you now how it launches at the track this weekend

As Rob 02 would say
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Maybe it's an Aviator Torque Converter. They come with a high stall from the factory that bolts to the 5 speed auto. Maybe it has 6 bolts.

The only 6 bolt converters Ford has EVER built are for the 6.8L V-10 (used for the 5.4L S/C, the 7.3L Diesel and the 6.0L Diesel, until the 2004 Torqueshift made the 95K 6 bolt (low stall, same as the 4R100 6.8L) for the 5.4L SuperDuty, and this year we're making a converter for the Torqueshift for the 4.5L V-6 Diesel for delivery vans. All 5R110s have six bolt converters, but an 8 bolt model comes out in 2007, for the 6.0L.
Don't know what you have (and doubt if Jim does either) but it's not a Navigator Converter, they were all 4 bolt units.

I've linked the build matrix sheets here to show you what transmission went into the Navi (the 1Q and the 3Z, in 2000.) and what converter they have (XL7P-7902-AA) and the second link is the converter build matrix, which shows the XL7P model having a 4 lug cover. As you can see, the only 6 bolt converters are the 6.8L/Lightning model and the 7.3L diesel models. Just trying to keep someone from dropping $165 and then the tranny only to find the part they bought won't fit.

2 questions:

1. How long will a stock "Navigator" convertor that was designed to hold up to what 300ftlbs torque last in Don's Beast that is putting out over twice that amount? Will that even be an issue?

2. Wasn't there 2 different torque convertor's used in the navigator?
XL7Z902AARM -
and
XL3Z7902BARM -

These were from a 2000 Navigator. I haven't a CLUE what the difference is.
