Post First I was upset, now I am embarrased

Went back to look at the curb I hit the other day, and discovered it was broken with numerous jagged edges sticking out all over the place.

So, can't blame the tire, it was me.

Still don't like the jack and spare situation, but my friendly Lincoln Service Mgr. swapped out a spare on one of their vehicles (same size) just to keep me happy.
Also found no Lightning tires in stock in Atlanta, so must wait till next week.

Bill

Besides watching curbs from here on out, you may need to be looking for new potholes after all the ice/snow events. It sure left us in NC with loads of new ones. It's an obstacle course on some highways.

Just as I suspected! It was hard to imagine a basically low-speed contact with an intact curb blowing out a tire. Especially a "Z" rated tire.

Although an earlier comment about the sidewall rib pattern potentially being a problem is food for thought.

Thanks for going back for a look-see.

High speed tires typically have thinner side walls so they can more readily disapate heat, especially Z rate ones.

Hi Bill,

Don't fret I also got pushed off the road by a black 540 BMW and hit a 3" curb at 20-30 MPH poped both tyres and bent both rims. I'm now really interested in everyones opinion about after market tyres, another person has tried 295/35/18 but this gives even less protection between tyre to rim, but he seems happy, that is while not hitting curbs, like me. I think BFG will be my next set, 295/45/18.

Thumbs up

The part that would bother me most is, doesn't the Lightning have a 5000# towing capacity? You think about 5000# without any type of torsion bars make a pretty good tongue weight and out there hauling a$$ on the interstate, pulling a 5000# trailer with these paper thin side wall tires makes you think.....??

Red face

Some perspective.... My 92 F150 XLT has Goodyear Workhorse radials ( Thin sidewalls - Not likley ) and I had the misfortune of barely scraping a concrete curb while parking and it tore open the sidewall.

The point I am making is bad luck comes in all flavors and the heaviest duty tire is not designed for ANY sidewall impact.

Silver_2000_Soon, so your saying that a F1 tire is as good as a light truck tire for hauling??
Also there isn't ANY tire that will take a hit on the side better than most??
I think not.....go tire shopping and read side wall specs.
