New Lightning Owner

I have been lurking here the last few days. I decided to go ahead and join. I am picking up a low mileage lightning tomorrow.

Already have a magnaflow catback on the way.

I have a friend with a tuner. He says he has a program for a lightning.

I am also considering a 2.75" upper pulley and some kind of cold air kit. do the cold air kits really work well on these engines or are they all hype?

Not looking for any outrageous performance numbers. However, I would like to break into the 12s...even if it is a 12.99. I dont plan on going the slick, gears, trans upgrade route. This is my daily driver.

See you all around...

All hype until you make huge power. Get a 4lb lower pulley instead.

Hey Allcarfan, welcome to the sight. Even if, the cold air kit does not make more power it sure sounds better. AH, the supercharger whine it is very addictive. Enjoy your truck.

Welcome and congrats on your new L!

Filter, lower pulley and tune a must and yes considerable difference! I agree with the comment above, go with a lower either a 4 or 5lb pulley. The upper may appear the easiest route, but you are more subject to belt slip with the smaller upper.

I just went with a 5lb lower and I am very happy with the results, cold air and predator tune. Like you I am interested in more punch, but not the track this time.

Remember you should replace the stock plugs, too with the tune. Go search on this sight for plugs you will find a wealth of info.

Good Luck!

Hmmm, I thought the air kit made a nice difference! Atleast do a K&N panel filter. And the LOWER pulley is a better way to go. do a 4lb lower interchangable, an filter, and a GOOD tune, and you'll see 12's.

Also....I saw your near atlanta. If you can't find any local lightning buds to get some ideas from....I'm in Athens for the next week, drop me a line at alord99 at hotmail dot com, and we can meet up. I got a few mods on my truck. It might help hook you on the mod addiction!

I first ran 12s in April 2000....long before pulleys became available.
So were Sal and Spiro....on a chip and Filter

Thanks for all of the responses everyone. It is a 2002 lightning with 21,000 miles on it...thats after my 700 mile trip home.

I was looking into a 3" and 2.75" upper pulley. Id like to run a 3" for the street and then change to the 2.75" IF/WHEN our club goes to the track (I think it is inevitable). I think the issue that I may run into with that will be the tune. I dont think that the tune for the 3" pulley will work too well with the 2.75" pulley and vice/versa. Advice?

Or I was thinking of ordering This kit: http://www.rpmoutlet.com/lightning.htm (Option E and a 6# lower) That should put me right where I want to be and I THINK that is a fairly decent price. I am also about to order some 305/45/18 Nitto 555R. I know they are drag radials, but I dont plan on driving in the rain a whole lot and we dont have any ice or snow here There is such a limited selection of tires for the stock rim size.

This is one of my favorite pictures that we took when we picked it up:

Welcome! I'm in not to far from you in S.E. Tennessee.

Modular Powerhouse is just outside of Atlanta. After you get a 4lb pulley, go by there and let them dyno tune it for you. You won't regret it.

So, after I am done with all of the modifications I am going to perform, just take it to modular powerhouse and have them dyno tune it...rather than buying a tuner that I am only going to really use once? Thats the route to go?
