Question Blocking off the EGR (Sal)

Thought it could help performance!

Anyone have any opinions on this. I'm pretty sure the chip would have to be customized to do this without throwing codes or having problems. Sal could you enlighten us on this.

The egr valve is not open at WOT. Only uses at part throtle, trying to keep NOx down. Once throtle is opened and goes above 3/4. The ecm shuts off egr , because enough fuel is going into motor to keep NOx down. NOx goes up with higher cyl temp / leaner fuel mixture.

My concern was more of the fact the the EGR valve would be raising intake temps and therefore make the motor more likely to ping or have detonation.

Emissions weren't my concern since I am not required to have an emissions check.

I know on other vehicles I've modified, blocking off the EGR reduced intake temps significantly. Only side effect was it took longer for vehicles to warm up to operating temperature.

Was starting to miss the old "go faster" topics lately.

Thanks for the input William

Bad!! Very Bad!! I would definately not do that on the new Lightning. I was talking with an engine plant engineer one day, who was telling me they forgot to hook up the EGR on a 99 Lightning and they toasted the motor in less than 8 hours!! Besides, the EGR is not really a BAD thing to have. It's job is to introduce inert (unburnable) gas into the combustion chambers to cool them down. This process lowers NoX emmisions (which form over 2500*) and helps reduce the chance of part throttle detonation.

Sal:
Is the tempeture sensor in the transmission a seperate unit as in removable? or is it an internal sensor and feed into the computer via wiring harness?

Just cause I'm curious, but how can it decrease the intake temperature by adding exhaust into the intake.

What do you think is the cause of the motor getting toasted on the 99'. I am not that familiar with the Lighting's whole setup, however I guess that's why I'm here.

Is it possible that by not hooking up the EGR it stayed open and this would have been the cause for the motor's early death.

<<Just cause I'm curious, but how can it decrease the intake temperature by adding exhaust into the intake.>>

Because while the air added by the EGR is a couple hundred degrees, the temperature of the combustion chamber air during burn can get over 2000 degrees. NoX emmisions appear over 2500 degrees. The point of the EGR is to add unburnable air to cool the combustion chamber down. You could add ambient air, but that has burnable oxygen in it, and would affect the A/F ratio. Putting unburnable air into the intake does not affect the A/F ratio. Remember, the HEOGs only read oxygen.
