cut becomes a point, rather than a flat surface.
But it can be done. I just wouldn't drive very
enthusiastically with that mod installed.

so whats the most affordable way to drop it 2-3 inches?
Ground force Shackles 2.5 drop in rear. Ground Force Part # 91200. Just my 2 cent. Cost about $ 90.00.
Correction: This part # is for the 2004. Part number for your Truck may br different.

I would go with the Hothkis. Its a complete kit and since you said you were inexperienced with suspension, you wont have to deal with peice mealing different parts together. One of vendors said they had a used Rouch kit a couple of weeks ago. Thats what I have. Regretfully, they dont manufacture it anymore.

The three link or four link went out the window when Kenny Brown went belly up ...

Also, note how far out of alignment the bed is relative to the cab. I don't know whether the X-Factor will help, but I know it can't hurt!

I must have been too heavy on the sauce when I posted this. How can I ever forget? I've been called much worse than that...

I noticed this last year. The stock bumper attached to both frame rails and helps to prevent torsion. I noticed some funny stuff going on in the rear especially noticeable with the slicks at the track.
I had to put my hitch on to tow and I immediately noticed while driving how much rigidity was added. Take a look at the hitch and how well it works as a frame brace. Also, take a look at what Toyota did to their Tacoma X to strenghten the frame especially in the rear.
I am convinced that the stock bumper and hitch add a significant amount of rigidity in the rear.
The challenge in designing a new frame brace is to add this rigidity back without the weight. Just behind the roll pan I will probably weld a brace to tie in the two frame rails and cross brace the rails in each corner.
It never ends.
