Has Anyone Swapped A Manual Tranny ( Tremec, 6 Speed) Into Their L. If So Does The Reg F150 Use A Clutch Cable Or A Hydraulic Assembly.

hydraulic on my odl v6 f150, and one reason the l never came with the manual was bc of the length of the shifter. from top of the ball to the bottom of the mount was barely under 3 feet if I remember correctly mabey it's two. The throw is lllllloooooonnnnnngggggggggg. don't expect to power shift, and expect an auto lightning at the same power to smoke you.

Good luck finding a clutch to withstand 450 ft lbs on a vehicle weighing 4800#'s.

It can be done. The factory F-150's use a hydr. Clutch but you could always just run a cable clutch seeing as the truck is an auto to begin with. a TKO 600 would work pretty well the only thing I am not too sure about would be the supporting hardware. Would you need to get a custom made d/s, bellhousing, mounts, etc. As for the shifter a Pro 5.0 would keep it pretty short even if the shifter is a bit long. My Pro 5.0 on my 3650 has about 1.5" between 1st & 5th and maybe 1.5-2" between 1st & 2nd. As for clutches they are there for a price.

All things equal I think a 5spd L would beat an auto L, on the otherhand an L with a nicely built C4 or Lentec would eat the 5spd for lunch.

Im looking into this for a daily driven steet truck, not seein track time. A TKO600 was the plan with a SPEC stage 3 or 4. Stage 4 isnt very street friendly. Have driven 04 mystic cobra (here in fort myers) with tremec and stage 4. Wouldnt I use the same 4.6-tremec bellhousing? Driveshaft was a gimme, i knew that wasnt gonna work. Thand for all the info, keep it comin! I wanna see some pics, I know someone has already done it but dont know who.

Somebody has already done this, a vendor I think. I recall the cost being over $10,000. Tranny, bellhousing, drive shaft, computer, etc.

I can't see it costing that much. You can get a brand new TKO 600 for like $2500, bellhousing, driveshaft, shifter and mounts for another $1000. I am not sure what would need to be done with the computer. I am thinking more like 6K max.

Actually, I think it was somewhere near $16K. I was shocked at the price too, but after reading the extensive mods required to do this, I guess it made sense. There was a whole magazine article on it, but I forget who did the swap. GMS maybe, or Roush?

16K!!!!! That is a bit out there. Well maybe there is that much work involved but for that why even wast your time? You could build a total motor and auto for that.

The 6 speed swap was part of a project by Bennett Coachworks in Milwaukee. Here is a link to it http://www.hotrodbuilders.com/ProjectDetails.aspx?56

I drove this truck and have to say if I had the money, I'd do it in a minute. It changed the entire character of the truck. Throws were no worse than my 93 Cobra and it would be perfect for road course or AX open tracking.

Bob said afterwards that $16K was probably a little high for the swap and could probably do it for less if asked. The hardest part for him was re-programming the pcm for the manual tranny.
