noelvm - for replacement speakers, get 4 ohm.
try to go to a stereo shop & listen to the speakers before you buy them.. i just put 4 6x8 pioneers & a 4 channel kenwood amp in my friends f250.. they had a pretty good sound.
but it all boils down to how much you want to spend. just remember this. you get what you pay for!

pioneer is good, but there are better speakers..

PBGAS-

In addition to replacing all four speakers, I have also added two Bose 301 bookshelf speakers behind the seats. I have one 200 watt 4 channel amp powering all six speakers. 2 channels for the front two and 2 channels for the rear four.

The amp is pretty hard to wire up. I had a local shop do it. I supplied all the parts. In addition to two sets of RCA cables, you will also need two sets of speaker wire to RCA converters. The Ford head units don't have RCA outputs. Also need speaker wire to run from the amp to each speaker. If you are not a stereo expert it is probably worth paying for the installation. I could have done it myself, but considering how long it would have taken me, it wasn't worth it. Expect to pat $150 for the install. If I had to choose between replacing the factory speakers and getting an amp, I would definetly get the amp first. The factory speakers are actually not that bad. That's my .02.

Good luck....

PBGas,

I am getting a 4 channel amp installed along with separates for the front and woofers only for the rear. Will be a professional install with good quality components from a past vehicle. Cost is $225-$250.00. Four hours to do. Would never do it myself. Been there, done that, got the sore back to hang my shirt on!

1Bad....

If you can help me out here....I am very, very interested in putting an amp in my truck. Was it very hard to wire up the amp to the stock head unit and is that same amp powering all 4 speakers?

Let me know...

Thx a bunch

Those of you who have replaced the stock speakers--What are the sizes Looks like the fronts are 5X7 and the rears 6x9? Is this correct.

After helpnig a friend w/ his install (2 12's) id reccmoend disconnecting the rear speakers entirely. There actually quite pointless, they fill up the air a bit, but if you want a economical solution, just replace the fronts. Oh, and if your system is too loud those speakers in the rear actually vibrate aginst the plastic trim making a horrible racket .

Talking

After talking to my deaf son (hes got to be deaf and hearing about his setup) here's what he recommended. Boston Acoustic 5x8 180w 2 ways in the front powered by a 400w amp. Cut rear speapers out they are worthless and run wires to a 300w bi-lineal amp to power 250w subwhoofers mounted behind front seats. He's bringing this by for me to hear Sunday. Our test record (always has been) will be track one (heartbeat and scream) Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon. He says it's really great. Probably already suffered severe hearing loss. I don't know thou, he couldn't hear when he was youg either. The happiest day of my life was the day he said, "You know, all that stuff you told me when I was young that I thought was BS has turned out to be true." I asked if he would put that in writing. I'm still waiting. noelvm

I'm not really a hard core stereo guy. I just rplaced all four of my speakers with the Pioneer TS-A6895. I paid $89 a piece plus shipping, no tax. Sound quality is way better than stock. They are 200W speakers so they should be able to handle an amp if you want. This set up is perfect for me, but I don't try to blow my windows out with music either. If you want to do that your gonna want to put amp in.

Everyone has been a fantastic help regarding speakers.

And I do thank you. You have answered my question.

But here is a problem that I have discovered.

"Where to put the amp" when you don't want to take the jack out or strip out the rear storage compartment.

It seems that either one of the above mentioned items has to go or NO amp. Is this correct???

BTW, I paid $89 a pair not a piece. A friend of mine says he could get a small amp under the seat, without removing the jack and stuff. I've seen some pretty small amps so I believe it could be done. Just depends on how hardcore you want to be.

Hey Jim,
I got 2 McIntosh (2X100) amps. One mounts in the floor 'well' behind the passenger seat the other was hung upside down under the passenger seat. Seat moves as original, jack stays in place, can't see anything unless you look under.

Fordsales-

I have my amp mounted to the back wall of the cab, in the middle. It is just above the storage box and behind the armrest.

Great info regarding the amps. Thanks. I was told by a couple stereo installers that there was no room. You found the room and how to do it.

This is one of the many reasons why this board is soooo GREAT!
