Question QUESTIONS REGARDING STEREO AMPS

Would like to improve stereo souind quality while keeping factory head unit and cd changer. I plan on replacing speakers and adding an amp. Where is agood place to place the amp? Is it hard to get a wire to the battery to power the amp? I would like to use the factory speaker wire to the amp, is that possible with a 35 watt per channel amp? Crutchfield has agreat price on a Clarion proaudio 5 channel amp (35 times 4 and 100watt for a sub) $250 is hard to beat. My main goal is not to get louder sound but better quality sound.

Collins:

Replace the speakers first. The Polk DX-7 (3-way) are the best(imo).

Soundproof if you want to go to the next level.

If you like the sound, you're still under $300.00.

Just my .02.

And if you are still looking to buy an amp, I put mine right underneath my (driver side) seat. It fits perfect, and I did not bolt it down, since I sit with the seat all the way back. I also took out the plastic thing from behind the rear seats and put in a sub with 2 8"s. I am trying to save up to buy a stock head unit that has the cd player instead of the tape deck, I hear that works. Good luck

Do a search.

There was a number of threads just a couple weeks ago that talked about the same subject with tons of input from a lot of L owners.

That is where I discovered that I could put my amp under the passenger seat.

I installed two amps under passenger seat. Took plastic box out and put two 6.5" passive bazooka,s and replaced factory cd changer with another cd changer mounted it between bazooks. Also changed factory head unit with clarion pro audio that takes a cd in it.Amps need air to keep from over heating. Can't tell where the amps are.Had all this done by people that do it for a living.

Hey Collins, I'd go under seats with the amp(s). Biggest Audio component to add is the sub-woofer(s). I'm ordering the MTX Thunderform dual 10" FRP20 like TamaBay has put in. I may use the 8104 drivers if I get a good price. But since the sub(s)can ONLY go against the rear wall behind seats, the underseat is all that is left for and amp(s) and relocating a CD changer.

Regarding amps, the Clarion is a great value at $249. 35Wx4@4 Ohm(or 45Wx4@2Ohm)(or 90Wx2@4Ohm Bridged) plus a 100Wx1@4Ohm Subwoofer out is great.

But since we're all millionares here (refer to nosy's questionare) I am going for the Infinity Kappa 255a at $399(also from Crutchfields). 50Wx4@4 Ohm (or 75Wx4@2Ohm)(or 150Wx2@2or4Ohm Bridged) plus a 200Wx1@4Ohm or 300Wx1@2Ohm Class D Subwoofer out is great for $399. It has endless and nice cross-over/roll-off and bass boost controls to play with while I am waiting for the group to decide who's chips/filter and gears are best, and the 150HP NOX kit to get out of the NOX's development lab.

Happy Listening

(PS I'm waiting for the comment "who needs radios in a racing truck. Pull the dead weight out and toss it." But what else do we do while waiting for our Non-Lighting equipped friends to catch up to wherever we are caravaning to?)

This is the first of many upgrades:

I'm running ~220W rms to the sub, sounds good.
But I'm mulling over the number to put a killer stereo in the truck ~600-700 W RMS (all out board amps, 10 band eq & active crossovers, high power front components, componet rear fills, 1/2 farad cap, dynomat) Saving up abit to do it right.

Hey SilverBullet,

Thats exactly what I want for mine.

1) which color did you order, light grey (FRP20G)or charcoal (FRP20C)?

2)Which drivers came with your thunderforms?5104, 6104, or ??? (or did you buy separately?) They look like the metallic cones.

3) Where did you buy yours???

4)Integral amp or seperate. If you wire the two 10" 4 ohm subs in parallel you get a 2 ohm load and your amp can frequently deliver more power (300W RMS vs 200 RMS for the Infinity I am scoping out.)

Thanks in Advance
Douglas

hey Collins8
I scoped out that Clarion amp, looks to be pretty good,i think that with what you are looking for that amp will be more than adequate. Its isnt hart to get the wire from the battery to the amp, there is a hole in the firewall that should work, just look for it.Id have to check where exactly it is on mine.Like tampa was saying for you probably the best thing is to go with those mtx thunderforms, yes you can use the factory wires, what my installer did when he used the factory wires in the doors and rears was run new wire to the crossover, then went into the wires that ran into the door and clipped onto the wires with alligator type clips. So it is possible but you just have to get new wire close to the wire harness that leads to the doors.Im still not 100 percent sure how he did the rears though but it should be possible to use those factory wires as well.

Collins8-

I put a small 75 watt/ch amp (PPI) behind the passenger kick panel. Works great! I did have to relocate a small section of the wiring harness to the lower section of the panel. Otherwise it just slides right in! This leaves you room for other amps/goodies under the passenger seat. I put in a 400 watt Crossfire Sub amp and my crossover under the passenger seat.

Anyone seen the new solobaric speakers. Kicker just came out with them and they are suppose to be even better than the old solobarics. The old subs kicked a$$ so I'm sure these ones pretty sweet. They make one in a 15" design!
