My thoughts on the Swanson Chip
For those of you that need to see dyno or quarter mile slips posted, this post will not fulfill your needs. This is only my observations regarding the Swanson chip.
As previously posted, last Friday I drove to Torrance in Calif. To meet Danny Swanson and talk about his chip.
While there, Danny programmed a chip for me and we replaced the SuperChip that I have been using with his. He told me to take the L for a spin. It was difficult to really test the chip because of the traffic in the area but my gut feeling was that the chip gave the L a greater pulling power at low end.
Over the weekend and putting on over 250 miles, the following is my conclusion and gut feeling.
I have seen a few posts regarding a "surge" with the Swanson chip. Danny told me that he had made an adjustment with his program that eliminated the problem. He told me where the adjustment was made but Hey, I’m not a tech and don’t really understand. He said that it had to do with the converter and the RPM for the lock-out. But don’t keep this as gospel about what I was told. All I know is that there was not one surge in all the miles I have on the chip which is now over 300.
The shift is FIRM and I love it. With the SuperChip, I had ordered a Transgo Shift Kit to fulfill my shifting needs. With the Swanson chip, I canceled my Transgo order. Don’t need it. Which is a lot better because if there every was a trans. problem, Ford would notice the mod change even after it was taken it off.
I truly believe that my L’s low end has picked up with the Swanson chip. I know because I am being sucked back into my seat harder and it just plain feels faster. The upper end is really hard to tell whether there is a difference or not between the two chips because I always felt I was holding on for dear life anyway.
I know this is not a scientific study but I felt the performance that I noticed from the Swanson chip was well worth the cost of purchasing a replacement chip for the Superchip. Plus Danny is available and a nice guy who wants to make sure the chip owner is happy.

This may have been asked but. Is the swanson chip a flip chip(two settings like PSP and superchip)?

When I spoke to Danny over a month ago he said it was a single program chip. That may have changed though. The high start up RPM could be caused by the increased timing. Idle speed is controled by the computer using a thottle by-pass valve (GM calls them Idle Air Control), During start up this valve is opened up, then closes to reach the desired idle speed. Increasing the timing will raise engine speed at a given opening (to a point, too much will drop speed).

All,
Presently Danny only uses/sells a non flip chip, however that does not mean he will not go that route, flip chip.
Danny's chip works great and can not imagine why you would want a 2 program chip(I can see 10,000 reasons why coming). Danny's chip works well on the street and strip.
Fyi... I idle at 600 - 700 RPM. Sorta hard to tell where it really is since it is a tad above 500 RPM.

FORDSALES,
Would you describe what you mean when you say your shifts are "FIRM?" I've been trying to find out if that means "slam/clunk the drivetrain south of the tranny when the tranny makes the next gear." There seems to be a lot of firm shifting going on with this or that chip, but I'm wondering about the longevity of the u-joints & rear if "FIRM" means sledge-hammer the hardware.

Jarm,
my .02 worth for reasons to have a flip chip.
1. Winter. It is an issue for me for I drive it during the cold months.
2. warranty work. Dont even want to start that pissing match.
3. Wife. she doent need the incrased power
(4 position flip-chip options)
4. "valet" setting (3000 rpm rev limiter)
5. "kill switch"
no flame intended
