Question More Power???

I was reading the Motor Trend report on the new Mustangs, the Competition and the Cobra Jet S/C. My question is if Ford can pull 380 H.P from a normally aspirated 4.6 why can't they use some of that technology to get the supercharged 5.4's to push at least over 400 h.p??? Do they think that the L's have enough or what?
Also, I heard the 2001 L's are going to come with 375 HP stock from the factory, anyone know how they are getting the extra 15 horse?

Splitfires and Slick 50?

Just kidding.

I heard from a Ford guy that there will be a new MAF for 2001. Isn't the intercooler also being changed?

The 4.6 used in the sports cars is a higher-revving, shorter-stroke engine. The 5.4 has a huge stroke, giving it that torque we all know and love. Unfortunately, without a new lighter, stronger material to make the engine, this reduces the maximum safe piston speed, and so reduces the rpm range the 5.4 can operate in. Be happy that you have as much power available below 3000 rpm, there's no way to get that with the 4.6.

michael_hovis,
I know what you mean regarding torque, engine speed and what not. My question is their are ways to help hp/torque while leaving engine speed constant for example better heads, better intake. Why can't ford engineer some parts for the 5.4? I know they have the money to do it and I know they have the demand on this board if they did it.

I have been told that there will be a larger MAF and different intercooler along with a different lower intake the intercooler goes into. The programming will be more agressive, something like we do already. The hole in the fenderwall for the airbox will also be larger for more air intake.

Snake:

The extra 15hp could come from better programming easy. Look what the aftermarket chips have done to the #'s.

The power is coming from new Mass Air Meter and computer program. But don't think that 360 rated hp is really only 360. In other words the 375 will be more like 390-400, as the 360 is more like 375 - 380.
