On the way home from work, my L started emitting a medium frequency tone. The tone can be heard with the radio, or air conditioner on or off, and while driving or stopped. It lasts for about 5 or six seconds, stops for about 3 seconds, and repeats the sequence. It is of reasonable low amplitude - can be heard clearly when stopped, and while driving can be heard in the above sequence if I listen carefully. I tried going to WOT a few times to jar things. I assumed that it was coming from the engine compartment, but upon opening the hood, I could not hear it listening around the engine. I would guess it is coming from behind the drivers side front panel. Any ideas?

Thought I would try again, and bring this to the top. The tone is starting to drive me nuts. For days now, it has remained the same. When the tone starts it slightly rises in volume toward the end of the sequence prior to stopping. It has remained with the same interval since I first noticed it. Interestingly for the first minutes of operation, it can not be heard, but once it starts it just keeps going like the Energizer Bunny. Unfortunately, not cute like the bunny.

I think you are right. It is the type of thing that if taken to the dealer will just result in loss of time, and probably nothing accomplished. I have simply cranked the radio up a few clicks, but is maddening.
