Wuold anyone be interested in an AWD Lightning
Piddling around at work last night, I got to thinking about what would be involved in making an AWD or 4WD Lightning. I know sqaut about differentials, front axles and the computer differences between AWD and 4WD, but building a 4WD Lighting tranmission wouldn't be that big a deal, actually. The parts would be about $250, and I imagine the front drivetrain could be gotten from a Super Duty or an Excursion from a yard. NAy thoughts? (it's about 1 PM, which is my equivilent of 3AM for most people, so I'm tired and don't want to go much farther on this post, but I do want to explore the idea)

I don't think Kevin know too much about all-wheel drive.
But Factory tech, how about a Navigator AWD transfer case?
I know of a Lightning powered AWD Navigator that exists, and it is owned by a privated citizen. I understand that you can mate the lightning transmission to the transaxle with little work.

I think it is a fantastic idea. Once you start modding this truck traction becomes the weak point, and its really hard to get a good launce without wheelspin. However the concerns are a)cost, b)weight, and c)reliability. Its an interesting idea to explore, though.

Kevin00svt, Your truck must be stock! I have only a chip & filter, & if I stomp the pedal at a light, 100 foot burnouts are a few seconds away. It would be nice to actually hook up once in awhile. People tend to give you dirty looks for the peeling. You could really launch at the strip! Lloyd

Forgive my stupidity, but what exactly is the difference between AWD and 4x4? I don't think a Navigator would work because the frontend components (brakes and stuff) are from an Excursion. Is the Navi an AWD setup, cuase if it is you could use off the shelf parts. My thoughts on this are a hookup thing like the Sy/Ty more than how it would get around in bad weather. Could I keep it lowered? A Navi shares the same platform as an F-150, so I'm pretty sure everything from one would bolt right in if the brakes and stuff will bolt to the front end. Changing the transmission to 4WD is a matter of a new output shaft and extension housing. There are 4 extension housings that would fit, one cast iron and 3 Aluminum, I would think you'd want the cast iron one because of the torque. All the deisel 4x4 units get cast, the aluminm ones go on 5.4 and 6.8 engines that don't have near the torque. You can still balance the coast clutch and forward clutches, go with a six plate one way stack and six gear planetaries. Once you get beyond the extension housing though I'm really clueless about what I'd be getting myself into.

I think an all wheel drive lightning would be AWESOME. The traction advantage would overcome the extra weight issue, also the extra grip around corners would mean extra speed, good for back road rushing. To see one would be neat. I have a 98 off road with 35's, but if an AWD lightning were made, I think I would give up the 4x4 thing for a while.
