Having owned both years I can honestly say that stock for stock my new '00 is a bit quicker than my '99. My first pass in the '99 was a 14.3 @ 96. My first pass in the '00 was a 13.98 @ 99. I checked the time slips and traction and weather was very comparable. With the addition of a JL chip and PSP filter kit my 1200 mile '00 has run a 13.15 @ 103. I went a best of 12.95 with the '99 but that truck had 16K miles on it and more performance parts. Drive it like you stole it from day 1 and these trucks can be terrors on the street and track no matter what year. Later.

Ya my salesman told me that and he was sorry cause i left a nice new patch on the garage floor. Then He see's me clippin past him at about 135 on the highway. Went to the dealer that week to ask some questions, and he looks at me and says, so the trucks running pretty fast down the highway uh. If you want less air resistance (drag) you should leave the tonneau cover on and the tailgate up. As a mechanical engineering student in college, I have seen the results of wind tunnel testing of our pickup trucks at Texas A&M and the worst thing you could do is the two things you did.

The testing showed that the air is actually rushing back into the area of low pressure that is created in the bed immediately behind the cab. If you don't believe me, take a look at one of those nets that some guys replace the tailgate with. They all are being blown forward at highway speeds. Thus, leaving the tailgate up allows the tailgate to try to recover some of the energy back into the truck system.

Leave the tonneau cover on and the tailgate up.

One other modification that also helps is to extend the roofline of the cab back about 1/3 of the way over the bed. That significantly reduces drag. Although, I have never seen that done on the street.

Also, your truck will get faster with more miles as it breaks in. Just wait until you get over 3,000 miles!
