Angry Worst fears come true... Intercooler is going south!

Well I was hoping it was all just some kind of bad dream but sure enough. I looked under the hood yesterday and intercooler was only half full and has a bunch of foam type bubbles all on the top of the fluid. I only have 4500 miles on the truck and have only had it for 5 months. Merry Christmas Sam!

Does anyone know any updates on whether or not ford plans to put the 2001 intercoolers in for the intercooler fix? Does anyone know if Ford ever plans to release a TSB on this?

I always ignored the intercooler posts because mine didnt leak. Well here I am! I am listening now!

aargh... thats bad.

hmm.. since the intercoolers are going south, and i'm allready in the south (louisiana), does that mean that my intercooler wont have anyplace to go?

i hope mine doesn't start leaking.. i'd hate for the rednecks at the local dealership to try to work on my beastie.

mrbbqman - if my intercooler "goes south", can it come live with you??

scc2000l - how long did it take to lose that much coolant?

my truck is 9 months old and i have 14k on the ticker.. i'm kinda glad it hasn't started leaking, but i do want to get it replaced before my warranty is up.

Mine started leaking, right around the 14K mile mark. It eats about half a gallon every 600 miles. I carry a spare gallon of pre-mix with me at all times now. I took it in, was told there was no leak to be found. At least its on record that I had a complaint with it. Gorno Ford really $ucks A$$.

Don't believe what ford says about no leak cause when I brought mine in on a thursday, they said they would check it out. Well friday I get a call and no leak but will fill up your resivoir for you. So I got to get it and I brought my black marker. So I pop the hood and show the service guy the black mark I just made in front of him with the marker. I told him I would be back monday to get my new intercooler and said ok sir, probably talked some mad ***** behind my back but anyway. Sure enough my intercooler was bone dry by sunday morning, so I brought it back monday and he said ok I'll check it again.

This time he calls up the main ford office to ask about this and they quickly said don't worry about it where sending over everything you need to fix it. Just replaces the old parts with the new ones supplied. So after that phone call monday I got my new intercooler on tuesday and my truck back wensday. Couldn't believe how fast they moved. Anyway It doesn't leak that much now, I only noticed about 1/4 inch over a 8,000 mile period. So who knows. Good luck with you L.

I'm having the same problem, it's Bull*****. I just tried to call SVT and give it to them, but no one was in. Everyone with this problem should call them and flood the hotline with complaints until something is done. What are we all going to do when the warrenty is up?? They will never fix the problem because it will cost them too much and in the end we will be paying big bucks every 20,000 or so miles. As one person we cant do anything, but if we all pull together maybe we can make something happen.
I love my truck, but I hate the Ford corporate bastard who knows what is going on and is doing nothing about it. I say we all drive to the Ford HQ and do one huge open header burnout.

SCC,
I'm now one of the leaking crowd. Just noticed that it's half full, and I've been checking it every week since I'd heard about the i/c situation.

When are the NEW parts going to be available...........hurry up 38topgun.

sorry SCC2000L, it sounds like you have made it to what Ford calls "an isolated problem". there are probably a couple hundred lightning owners here and it's more than an isolated few with the same problem. mine is 18 months old 24K miles and hasn't budged even a 1/4 inch. for some reason i check it all the time

well, sports fans, if your dealer tries to give you any ***** about your leaky intercooler, insist that they call Jake Doff at the Ford Tech Hot-line, and he will set them straight. If they refuse to do this, get in touch with your Ford area rep (or is it zone rep?) and yell bloody murder.
But Jim, if Gorno continues to stonewall you, I'd just continue to add the pre-mix until you have a catastrophic failure, and then they will have to replace the whole damned motor with a 2001 motor and intercooler.

Clonetek- Last time I checked it was about a month ago and it was perfectly full.

I think I will give SVT a call tomorrow and ask them what they are doing about it. I hope they plan to replace the old failed units with an 01 unit which hopefully arent flawed. I would hate to get the 00/99 intercooler and have the damn thing fail on me again. Expecially if it fails after warranty. May have to jump on an extended warranty after all.

Thanks for all of your well wishes. Hopefully things will work themselves out. They always do one way or the other

I think modd69 is right in everyway. WHat are we going to do when are warranty is up. We should all call up and complain. It probably won't solve anything but its worth a shot. Don't let Ford Screw us over.
