Thumbs up Z06 zapps Lightnings at the track!

Went to Speedworld tonight and met modd69. Although I did not have the opportunity to run the Z06, modd69 did. First let me start by saying that modd69 has a very, very sweet running Lightning, and talk about one incredibly consistent driver--my hats off to you! I believe every run he made tonight he ran in the 13.6xx with nothing more than the Down's intake tube (Oh excuse me, he was way off the mark on one run where he ran a 13.7xx). Anyhow, there was a bone stock Z06 out tonight with nothing more than Nitto drag radials. I saw him run a 12.79x and then a 12.5xx. Man that thing flew!! There was also a Viper there tonight running in the high 12's and I saw him run a best for the night of a 12.41.

Just a warning to all the Lightning folk--beware the Z06 is nasty!

Question

Um, should anyone be suprised by this "news"? Was anyone unaware that stock for stock, a $50,000, 385 hp sports car will outrun a $30,000 360 hp truck?
I hope not.

Cool

Those drag radials are probably worth more to a light car with that much HP than a glovebox full of mods.

Question

how do you know he was "bone stock", Peter? Not that I don't think they are fast cars, but have you ever seen anyone go to the trouble of mounting drag slicks who hadn't tweaked his vehicle in a few other ways, chip, filter, etc?

Hey Peter, you're too kind. After you left the ZO6 ran a 12.31 with a 60' of 1.90. That thing is really fast, but I'll take me truck over it any day!

Hey Peter B - Yup, the Z06 is one fast machine - but keep in mind that GM under rates all of their powertrains - as all manufacturers do. The Z06 has a variant of the LS1 - the factory may rate it at 385 hp - but the reality is that the motor is running more like 435 hp - stock! The chip/ filter/header/muffler/gear thing on this GM engine is honestly a waste - all that's needed is a cams download and a tech II scanner and someone that knows which program to use - now that's what makes the ZO6 a 3300 lb rocket. Actually the race with the L seemed stacked - 4800 lb vs. 3300 lb - plus - the Vette had drag radials. When possible street race a regular Vette - you'll be very surprised - I did - twice - the Vette driver was sure humble - I wonder if he traded it in - as I have not seen him around lately! I will be contacting you tomorrow via e.mail concerning SVT wheels. Cruiser

Kristi2000l,
I know, I know, it is no comparison, especially the money delta, but I was really surprised to see those kind of times here in Phoenix. A car running deep in the 12's here is very, very respectable. I just thought GM rated it a 12.6, so when I saw better here, that really surprised me.

alphadoggy,
I don't know for sure. modd69 was the one who asked him and that is what he was told. Honestly, I would suspect that it truly was bone stock as I would not expect any mods yet available for the Z06, other than maybe an intake or filter. Keep in mind, the Vette is much lighter than us, I would imagine the drag radials are a necessity on a Z06. I've got a 96 LT1 (a mere 300hp), and I cannot run that car nearly as consistant as the Lightning. So many times I have burned the tires completely through 1st gear.

modd69,
I wish I was still there to see that run!

Cruiser,
Yeah, I think you are right, they must underate that thing. I bet it is in the low 400 hp range. Not had a chance to run a C5 on the street, but I know the launch is very trickly on one of them. This driver obviously knew how to drive and those drag radials must have really worked well.
Sounds great on the wheels--I can't wait to get them!

Can anyone explain why the tirew for the c5 corvettes are so expensive, they are about $379 each in the rear and like $299 each in the front. Why the hefty price tag?

Which tirew are you talking about? And what is your source? Dealer prices are always sky high. I checked the tire rack prices, and on the rears, for the 5 most popular tirew they sell for the 'vette, prices ranged from $229 for the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS to $343 for the Goodyear Eagle F1 EMT.

Welcome to Z-rated 35-series tire land. Don't forget to bring your checkbook!!! Those are retail prices (which nobody ever pays, unless you're seriously deficient in the purchasing-savvy department), but it's a known fact that a quality set of performance tires, even if you were buying them for your lawn mower, will set you back at least 4-figures. This is nothing new, it's not some "new C-5 expensive tire" thing. I've got 245-40-18 Michelin Pilots on the front of my S351, 295-35-18's on the rear. $1300 bucks worth of rubber, even through Tire Rack. The cost of playing exotic! Those ain't no Camaro tires! By the way...funny statistic I heard, most dangerous cars on the road today (deaths-per-100,000 cars on the road):

1. Chevy Camaro
2. Chevy Camaro convertible
3. Pontiac Firebird
4. Geo Metro

WHAT A SUPRISE!!!! Could it be that many of their customers are typically Earnhardt-rootin ("NUMBER 3!!!"), skoal dippin, Hee Haw re-run watchin, a-drinkin & a-drivin highway menaces?? At least it appears that they are doing a quick job of exterminating themselves.

The tires for the vette are so expensive because they are the run flat series. The thing doesn't come with a spare.

'Black:

I'm pretty sure that the Z06 DOES NOT have run-flat tires. They're Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires and they're very high-performance and expensive.

Thumbs down

Just to confirm a couple of things, the Z06 DOES NOT have run flat tires. The regular C5 does and it definitely adds to the tires expense. In addition, most C5 owners hate the run flats and many replace them with non run flat tires.

69BOSSNINE, back the hell off my man EARNHARDT and his fans. Some of us are intelligent folk who just enjoy good, hard racing. Some of us also drive Gen 2 Lightnings (Like me).

He is what, 49 years old? and can still kick *** and drive the wheels off an 800 HP Cup car. Tell me, when have you ever driven your Lightning or any other vehicle into a corner at 195 mph plus. If you don't believe the man is driven, capable, and has nuts the size of softballs, join me at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March. End of rant!!!!

Thanks for the informative report, Peter B.

There are plenty of people here who compare their L to a Viper, a Porsche, a Vette, etc, etc.

Cost doesn't matter, IMHO. I said this last week...its an excuse when you lose. I'm sure I've used this excuse at some point years ago, but I've learned better.

You get beat, tip your cap...and then if you want to outrun the other guy then get off your rear and go mod your vehicle!

Update to original post.
modd69 wrote in another post that after I left the track, he saw the Z06 run a 12.31. Wow, that is a very respectable time for a reliable, turn key, daily drive capable vehicle. Now as soon as I get my Vette to run that time, I'll be happy--lot's of work (and $$ ahead!)
