The Pistons and rods are different for the Lightning! For 99.5-2000 Lightnings, your looking at regular prodcution unleaded cylinder heads and valvetrain, SVE forged pistons (20cc dish), 8.39:1 CR.

Dual 57mm throttle body, 80mm IBT air meter, eaton M-112 supercharger with a 2.46:1 ratio and 76mm pully. Low-inertia crank pully. Lightning Flywheel is not common.

For 2001 the head design has changed! All production unleaded engines get the same head and valvetrain. For Lightning, changes are Upper and lower intakes and INTERCOOLER,
thermostat housing, water pump, spark plugs, low-inertia crank pully and Flywheel. Those are the only differences between the S/C 5.4 2V and standard 5.4 2V in 2001.

Still M-112 S-charger and the SVE forged pistons. Don't know about the Compression Ratio yet!! The trans has also been updated from 2000 to 2001. That's another topic!!

Just my $.02

The only difference in the '01 transmission is the infamous mechanical diode, but it should be more reliable. Oh, and something in the converter changed in '01, but I don't know what, converters are like Voodoo to me. I just know that an '01 will go on a 2000 but a 2000 won't go on an '01.

Factory_Tech,
Didn't know that the 2000 wouldn't go on a 2001. Glad you mentioned it. "Why"?

The difference in torque converters is a damper friction material upgrade. In the Trany, new intermediate clutch friction material for heat resistance and longer life, & Yes, the almost cost savings mechanical diode!

Will the 2000 trany bolt-up to the back of a Cobra R block? I haven't got the block & crank yet. My contact is still working on it!

Thor,

I'm just guessing that you work in Livonia, too. But tell me, ATC, PTO or LTP? Or maybe a shop?

Thanks for the explanation, we don't get told why, they just tell us what.

Factory_Tech,
I work in Dearborn at the Experimental Vehicle Building.

We take our test cars over to ATNPC for trany updates when needed. I talk to some of the guys there to find out what I can do to get a little extra out of the 2001 trans. " They laugh when I ask!

Then I get the "If you can get extra"!! You tell us! Kind of reply back. I will get with them to find why we cant put a 2000 up to 2001. That blows my plans for the new engine!

I'll have to fork out more cash for a 2001 trany now.

I think you may have misunderstood me. The converter from a 2000 will not work in a 2001, but to the best of my knowledge a 2001 will go into a 2000 truck and a 2000 tranny will bolt to 2001 motor no problem. We didn't do anything to the calibration of the test stands for the '01s and if we have a non-compatible upgrade we ussually have to do that. Aside from the changes in the forward-direct clutch and mecahnical diode the parts are all the same, except the converter, of course, i don't know if the computer was diddled with but I suspect it was, this may affect the swap. I imagine you would know who to ask about that more than me. I may get to come up north to take some classes on the 5R, we'll have to do some racing. I've picked up a lot of friends in detroit on this board.
I got a question for you, the '03 is getting the 5R110w a year ahead of all the other gas engines, I'm guessing that this means that the '03 motor will put out more than 500 f/lbs of torque? Any confirmation on this?
If the torque goes over 500, (16.3% increase) that would put the HP at a minimum of 445. I like those numbers, I'll have to get in line for an '03 if they do that.

Factory_Tech,
Yea, I thought you were talking about the trans. The converter part flew over my head!!

If you drive up for classes you can bet we'll do some racing, tellegraph is one of the street/strips around here and no problem finding chevys to add to the kill list!! If you have a choice, schedule it around August for the WoodWard Dream Cruise. Man, is this town full of Muscle cars and women then!!.

On the 5R for 2003. Don't know! I haven't heard anything yet! Just post or send me an e-mail at slightnin01@aol.com when your going to be in town.
