Unhappy 2004 radio in a 2001??

Just purchased a factory 6 CD head unit from a 2004 L for my 2001. Went to hook it up and asside from having 3 din sockets (my 2001 has only 2 sockets), when I hooked in the 2 din plugs , and went to turn it on, it sounded like there was absolutely NO BASS. Tinny to say the least. Also it only played my behind the seat discs...couldn't get the cd's already in the head unit to play or even eject! I thought I read that the newer head units would work with the older lightnings? Any thoughts??

Should be a plug & play if it's from another F150. My '04 radio is in my '98 Ranger with no problems. Did the plugs only go one way (couldn't mix them up in the wrong socket?)

It was not a radio from a 2004 L then. I had someone sell me one that did the same thing you are talking about (no bass and no power). The front was not black either. Luckily he took it back and I found one that really can out of an 03-04 L. All I had to do was trim the plastic in the top of the dash so it would fit.

This definately was out of a 2004 L. I watched it come out. It does have 3 plug sockets in the back, while my 01 has only 2. The other thing is it would only play my rear cd magazine(the one behind the seat) and NOT the CD's inside the head??? There must be some type of re-wiring involved that I don't know about. Any help from those who have done this? thanks.

as far as only playing the changer behind the seat, did you press the CD button again?

But are you sure that it was the deck that came in it from the factory?

Ford made a head unit that looks just like the normal one, but uses external amps. There is also another lookalike that has a subwoofer jack. If you got that one, maybe it filters the bass from the main speakers?

Your best bet is to post in the audio forum here. Lots of experts on factory decks in that forum.

Funny you mention that, Tim. I was thinking the same thing about that 3rd din socket. It even sounds like there is only 4 watts going to the speakers and even with the bass cranked all the way up , there is little if any difference. Sounds almost like I'm listening to a transistor radio. I'll post it in the audio section. Maybe I'll get results there. Thanks, man.

The factory deck in my expy "looked" exactly like the deck in my L. But they definately had different connectors on the back. As Tim described the expy deck had external amps. I had some issues with the expy deck and thought I could use the L deck to troubleshoot it but the connections were not the same.

One more thing -- do a Google on the part #. There are some great sites that will tell you exactly what you have.
