I'm sure he thought he was fast, just because it was a Beemer (MORE POWER is their slogan).

Just make sure it doesn't have an M3 badge on the back - could be trouble there.

I like the M cars, but unless you run into a '01 M3, you will not lose to any 3-series BMW unless its modified big time.

Stock '97-00 M3s are fortunate to run 14.1s. Nice cars, IMHO, but no match for a Lightning.

328i? Yawn...

The new M3 will be awesome, though, if you like a luxo sports sedan.

Hah, I had the fortunate (unfortunate?) experience of teaching someone about their 328's lack of power. Thing was.. I wasn't even in the lightning.. I was in the mustang... And to make it worse, his GF (or maybe sister of the same age??) was in the car and they were both smiling at me at the light. I hate to think about how that guy felt after seeing my tail-lights before he ever left the intersection. Not to mention what his GF was thinking.

Kent,
Have you been running around town picking on poor helpless (yet expensive) BMW's?? It is hard not to, the owners usually stick their nose in the air when they look at a truck, that is until the light goes green and the only thing they can do is realize they spent alot of money on something that just looks good, no go!! When are you planning on that trip to Bandimere?

Hmmmmm, 0-60 in 4.75? I'm afraid it would lose to my truck, then. I don't even have a particularly fast example of the species. Lots of people on this board are running 12s, which means they are doing 0-60 in close to 4.0. Now I concede that the beemer is a lot more luxo than the L., but for twice as much money it ought to be. Never could quite see the rationale for fast sedans, anyway. If I wanted a car I'd far rather spend the bucks on a Z06, Viper, or NSX. But sheesh, for 80 thousand bucks I'd rather have a nice boat - come to think of it, I do.

Let's don't start counting G-tech times, folks (if that was anyone's inference). I'm sorry, but IMHO that is a very limited accelerometer.

Any test in a magazine is done using a 5th-wheel...much more accurate.

As far as running 12s = 4.0 in a 0-60mph...that's interesting. I guess my '90 LX runs 0-60 in like 2.5 seconds? I'm not saying you're wrong; I just don't know if I agree.

The M5 will run 13.0x in the 1/4 at 108+mph. That is excellent for a VERY heavy luxo-sedan. It costs a lot b/c its not just a tin can with a 400hp engine and 6-speed trans.

Also, that will smoke a Lightning without some decent mods. Sure, the L can go faster for much less, but I seriously doubt BMW was targeting a Lightning (or even a Vette or Viper for that matter) when they built the M5.

Realize you're talking to a complete power-junkie here, but I for one think the new '01 M3 and M5 are awesome cars.

Cool

The 328 is the wanna-be M3 in the BMW range. It tries at putting decent power but is limited by it's 2.8L and lack of M tuning/parts. Nonetheless, I give it credit for what it does do with 2.8L naturally aspirated. Now on the other hand my euro M3 with chip mod, filter, shrick cams,short-shift,etc. would give a stock L a hard time. The real challenge however would be my 400+ Hp 850csi with it's chips-n-filters (dual for the v12) and short shift 6sp vs. my modded L. When the L is ready I'll take them both out against each other and report the results. Should be really interesting =).

Sheesh, I can't say anything without somebody trying to nail me to the wall, can I, Wes? And no, my figures are not based on anything with the g-tech, I've never even used it in my truck. The 13.39 in my sig is off a time slip from a real drag strip. I am just trying to make some (un)educated extrapolations from known figures. For example, the Ferrari F355 spyder that MT tested ran a 13.4 also, but the terminal velocity was 106.8, 4.6 mph faster than me. They measured the Ferrari's 0-60 time at 4.9. In order for me to run the same e.t. at a lower trap speed I had to be getting to 60 sooner. My guess is 4.6, but it could be 4.7, its just a guess. Now a lot of our trucks are running mid or low 12s. For comparison's sake, the Viper that MT tested in 10/98 ran a 12.3 at 117.9. (I know, they have tested more recent, faster Vipers, but I am trying to find a good basis for comparison.) That Dodge did 0-60 in 4.1. As best I can recall, the L's who are running low 12's are still nowhere near that trap speed, so they have to be getting the jump on the first part of the track. I believe that some of our guys are doing 0-60 in 4.0 or better, which would easily wax an M5. BTW, the M5 that MT tested ran a 13.2 @ 107.4, and a 0-60 in 4.7. I concede he could beat me in the 1/4 now, but I think it would be very close 0-60, and of course once I get my shift kit, throttle body, and crank pulley installed, then he has to go out and mod his to stay ahead of me. Ahh, the never ending arms race.
I guess part of what I'm saying is that I could never really see the point of a very fast luxo sedan. It might make sense if you have access to the autobahn, but I don't think many people here would want to install roll cages so they can run the Silver State. I bought my truck because I needed a hauler for my boat, and making it faster than a stock M5 or C5 just adds a few giggles. If I was really into fast cars I'd buy a used TT Supra. With a few thousand in mods those puppies can make close to 1000 h.p., but where the hell would I ever drive it and keep my license? I say that if you really got a jones for speed, why drop 80k on a beemer when for 1/4 the cost you could buy a shifter kart and go as fast as your ability could take you.

Oh, and btw, since R&T says a Porsche 911 GT1 does the 1/4 in 10.9, and 0-60 in 3.4, I figure your 'stang must do 0-60 in about 3.2. But, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but I'd rather have the Porsche.
