I really doubt you are generating enough heat to break down mobile 1 (any weight). you can always get it tested. he probably hasn't seen oil get so full of fuel and get black so quickly (3,000 miles). the rumor is, that you better have 5w30 as recommended, if you come in for a warrenty engine problem.

clonetek,
In order to give an EDUCATED GUESS as to what's going on, you need to tell us how your truck is driven most frequently, how often you change it and whether it is plain Mobil 1 or the synthetic type. How many miles between startups does the truck go?

FYI- Ford will be using 5w20 weight oil excluvisely by 2003in all of their gas engines(Ford claims less sludge deposits & increased fuel economy)The engineers are doing quality control checks now for durability concerns in hot & cold climates. All but 5 engines for 2001 are engineered to use 5w20 weight oil.I would definitely stick with the 5w30 for the blown 5.4 Lightning engine.

While I occasionally use these places if weather is bad, but please, please do not believe anything they tell you. Most are not qualified to remove your drain plug! This includes the routine where they also show you your rear-end lubricant compared to new on a paper disc. They tried that one on me at 12,000 miles. Owners manual" do not remove inspection plug unless a leak is evident. ...filled with sythetic lubricant and good for life of vehicle (more or less). I have kept count over the years, with the very rare exception, chassis only greased after agrument. Each time I watch them skip it, then have to argue the point. And each time they lie and said they had already done it, but no grease zerks are still covered with dirt and no fresh grease. Last was incapable (literally did not know how!)of greasing it after he said he had. Had to do it myself when i got home. Another, suffered the embarassment of having to come topside to get top ball joint (early Corvette) after swearing he had done it the first time from below. Many more such experiences, but too litle space and patience. Sorry for the rant, but obviously a sore point with me. These guys are trained only to sell, wheather you need it or not!

Clonetek, I drinv like an a$$hole and my oil smells good. I highly doubt that this is happening. Ford says use 5w 30 reagular oil, your using mobil1 which has got to be ten times better for it, I doubt this is happening. I ran 10w 30 mobil1 in my GTP for 56,000 miles and never had a problem.
