Angry Dealer is trying to charge me $5K over invoice for '01 Lightning!

This really makes me mad! I was planning to trade my '98 Cobra in for a black '01 L, and I was told that "they are speciality trucks, and they only receive one or two, so they always mark them up." I'd love a new Lightning, but refuse to pay $38K for one! This dealer that quoted me this is Peyton Cramer Ford in Torrance, CA. I'm sure there must be another dealer in Southern CA that will sell this truck for sticker. A friend of mine suggested Beverly Hills Ford, I think I'll give them a shot.

I hate greedy dealers!!!! I called the salesman back and said thanks, but you can take my name off this truck now. I also informed him that Ford will be making more trucks this year, so come summertime, they might be selling this truck for sticker.

I ran into the same thing when ordering my Lightning. It was a real bad situation; the dealer agreed to sell at sticker, then I came in a week later to talk to them about something and when I needed them to pull my order, it had $5,000 over MSRP written across the sheet. I immediately asked for the manager, told them to give me my deposit back and I will take my business elsewhere. He said if things don't work out--I stopped him mid sentence and said I would never do business w/them no matter what. Drove to another dealer and placed an order for MSRP. No hassles at all. Problem is, there are people out there that will pay over MSRP and the dealer knows it, so they get what they can. Make some calls and you'll find a reasonable dealer. Good luck.

He's smoking crack. Tell him that he should get used to seeing that Lightning, because it will be there all year.

I got my Lightning for $1200 under MSRP. Shop around or wait a few months until supply is increased. Consumer confidence is down, $32K trucks won't be moving very fast. Especially a truck with a $5000 increase over MSRP.

Walk away...You know they'd also give you about 15k for your Cobra then turn around and sell it for 22k...Just walk away and find a good dealer..You're a ton of money in their bank, and they want to milk you for all of it..Don't let them

MS...Hold off for a little while. If Ford goes with it's plan to make 7000+/- of these bad boys this year dealers will be sitting on quite a few of them. You should be able to get one for a good price in a few months. One or two thousand under list is a lot of go fast parts! Good Luck

The best that I could do would be at MSRP. There are a number of spots in the US where one can pick up an L for less but So. Cal. is generally not one of them. I am in the business and I had to pay full window to get one. If you want to wait and order, a dealership in Alaska, Oregon or maybe Washington might be a good place to start.

When I was looking, prices were best in Kansas City, and Cincinatti. Way under sticker - but one and have it shipped to you. For me, to have one shipped in a closed truck was from KC to Dallas was like $540.

I guess the lesson here is to get the dealer to sign a price agreement or something when you put your deposit down, so they cant change their mind later.

If you want to take a bit of time and make about 10 to 30 calls, just find a dealer in any of the surrounding states that will sell for what you're willing to pay and fly out there to do a deal. You can probably save a few thousand; it will just be a bit of work.

I got my 2000 from Sunset Ford in Westminster for sticker. Don't know if it's true but my salesman told me the owner (who owns a white Lightning) dosn't believe in marking up over sticker.

I would NEVER pay a dime over sticker !

And I don't do ANY business with dealers that operate that way!

In the Chicago area they get sticker. Also, trying to use X-plan #'s is a joke, they basically laugh at you. So msrp isn't so bad.

Cool

Thanks everyone for the responses. I refuse to pay anything over sticker, that is just criminal what they're doing. Dennis, I've decided to keep the S351 I'm tired of driving a 5-speed every day in heavy traffic, hence the reason for trading the Cobra for the Lightning. I figure a black Lightning will be a perfect addition next to the S351, hehe.

The last time I checked, the California DMV won't let you buy a new car out of state and register it in CA. Ridiculous law, I know. I tried to buy a new Saleen from New Mexico, but it had to have 7,500 miles on it before I could register it. Jeez!!! I hate this state sometimes!

I will try the dealerships you all suggested Thanks for the advice!

MS KWIK, you say that you cannot register a new vehicle bought out-of-state? Is that because of emissions?

If there are any exceptions to that regulation, the 2001 Lightning may be eligible because it already meets Federal emission standards not planned to go in place until around 2003 or 2004. At least, that is what I have recently read. I am thinking I saw it in the latest edition of SVT Enthusiast magazine. Dealer may have a copy if you don't.

Maybe you can get a waiver from DMV.

First, call Morris at 949.291.8764. Tell him his customer, Bruce Conn, put you in touch. He'll process your order at MSRP and give you a DOBA.

If you have any problems call Villa Ford in Orange. About two weeks ago they still had one coming in that wasn't sold and they would sell at window. Ask for Gary Shooter. 714.637.8222.

My '01 is at the dock in Mira Loma, about 100 miles from here...
