I still can not believe that he's gone. you just never thought it would happen to Dale.

the chicago news tried to compare him to Michael Jordon. I'm sorry Mike's great, but Dale is a legend.

I raced many years in Europe.
A great loss for the family, friends, fans and auto sport.
NASCAR is far behind in safety concern and regulations.

My condolences to Dale's family and friends.

I too, am very saddened by this tragedy. Dale was my favorite driver since the early '90's. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. I imagine the Waltrips are devastated as well, by the tone in Darrell's voice when he said, "I sure hope Dale's O.K." as he looked from the tower to the car. And Rusty too, because they were great friends off the track and respected one another while on it.

I have tickets to Bristol next month and I don't even want to go now. It'll never be the same without him. If you loved him you loved him - and if you didn't, you loved to see your driver compete with him. He added tremendous excitement to the sport that can't be replaced. Ironically, his best friend, Neil Bonnett was killed the same way in '94 - a loss Dale never got over.

My prayers are with you and your family, may the legend of Dale Earnhart live on forever! May God bless all those that live for the thrill of speed, and our entertainment.

I have been thinking a lot about this. You know I love you Doggy but I don't know if I completely agree with you and I guess we'll never know, but at the risk of starting a conflict (and please remember that it is only my opinion) I know we have all seen more serious wrecks, look at Tony's aerial stunts yesterday, and we have watched drivers walk away from them. I personally feel that HANS and closed front helmet or not, God just decided it was Dale's time to come home. I just hope that he didn't suffer. The bottomline is that he is gone and even though hindsight is 20/20 it won't bring him back no matter how many things we all wish could have happened differently.

I have read everyones replys, and have noticed something that we have overlooked. Dale died doing something that he truley loved. I can only hope and pray that when its my time, it can happen doing something that I love dearly. Peace

tragic loss, but Dale did know the dangers of the wall, and nascar politics, from feb 12 2001:

Surprisingly, the most resounding call for improvement has come from NASCAR's most notoriously macho driver, seven-time Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt. He has a terse rebuttal to the long-running excuse of racing moguls that soft walls would fragment and require too much cleanup time during races:
"I'd rather they spend 20 minutes cleaning up that mess than cleaning me off the wall," he said.

Talking

In one of his interviews he said, "I have been very fortunate, but you must find happiness now, in your friends, in your family, and in your church."

I didn't alway liked the way he drove, but I admired his spirit to win, and I like to think that spirit is alive and lives in me.

He also said, "Anything but first sucks!"

I look forward to seeing him again with the Lord.

I reiterate, it didn't have to happen. Check out this article that DreaminAbout posted in another thread:

Earnhardt was rotten to the core on the track but everone respected him. Like Mikey said "he's hangin' out with my dad now, and thats not all bad"
