I just have to be honest about the finish on the new '01...

As bad as your fit and finish might have been, I know it was superior to my last ride, a Pontiac Trans AM Convertible.

Trabuco,
Glad to hear your feeling better, I knew you would. It sounded like you were suffering from a tiny case of buyers remorse. Most people go through that when they purchase anything that cost a wad of money. When I went down to the dealership, I had every intention of trading in my 95 PSD on a new Crewcab Longbed PSD. I saw the Lightnings out front and figured I would take one for a spin as long as I was there, before I knew it I was signing papers on the Lightning. My buyers remorse with the lightning lasted a good 10 or 15 seconds. It took me 4 hours to get home from the dealership, and I only live about a mile away.
I do miss the cruising range of the PSD, as I used to squeeze about 800 miles out of both tanks

Interesting to note that I have taken care of all of the issues you mentioned plus others that I didn't really like. The thing that absolutely drives me crazy is the gray vent on the far right side of the dash. I'm going to "fix" that one of these days. Trabuco, what color is your truck?

Hey Sixpipes, i too , was disgusted and dismayed by the "XL" status of my far right vent. so a little carbon fiber accents took care of it, at least from my vantage point. rumor is, you could build a spare lightning with the parts you removed from yours, c/w leaking intercooler, for authenticity, or something

Sixpipes, it's silver.
Wasn't you who asked a long time ago what types of side-pipes I was considering, stacks or lakes?
Lakes. But, I'm so juiced on the thing as it is I've cooled off on my need to reengineer it in the first week I own it.

Judging my the prevalent attitude hear, it is no wonder manufacturers get away with that *****! If mine would have come as you described, it would either have been fixed, or I would have purchased something else. This is the most fun vehicle I have ever owned, but I am not willing to settle for inferior fit or finish. Mine, BTW, had good fit and finish.

In view of the posts that I had read on this board prior to buying my truck I was surprised at the quality of the fit and finish when I took delivery. Paint was perfect, bumpers and bed on straight, etc. Sure, some of the stuff is kind of cheesy, like the storage box, but damn, where kind you get this kind of performance at this price in a vehicle that will tow my 6500 lb. boat?

I heard chopped tops are kinda a pain because you have to take the frame off the seats so you don't rub a bald spot on the top of your head. Everyone that sees you driving like this thinks you're a midget also. (no offense to any midget L owners)

If the fit and finish to a P*ntiac Grand Am is superior to your L's...then you either got one poorly assembled L, and/or the best put-together Grand Am I've ever seen. I don't know what year model you have...maybe its got 1000 miles on it? <j/k>
"Sorry, but you have to admit it..." Pontiac is totally cheesy when it comes to quality of interior fit and finish. I have never seen cheaper quality leather seats, cheaper plastic on the dash (it scratches SO easily), pieces that don't line up, etc. And yes, I've owned 2.
That's my absolute biggest beef with GM. Fit and finish of their vehicles is less than desirable...even though in many cases their drivetrains are better. If I was in the market for a "pony car" I would have to consider a GM F-body, just b/c in something like that I could live with some issues with fit and finish for the raw performance of an LS1/T56 drivetrain.
There are only two GM vehicles I've seen that going into the purchase I wouldn't feel like I'm compromising w/ regards to interior/exterior fit and finish. One is a Cadillac. I've driven 'em, ridden in them, etc and the newer stuff is really nice. The second is the Corvette. I went and checked out a Z06 a few weeks back, and its a nice car.
My Lightning has 14.3k miles on it and its tomb quiet inside (and yes, at speed, not just with the engine shut off ). I have no squeaks or rattles, and everything closes with an authoritative "thunk". My '96 Cobra is the same way and I've owned it for almost 5 years now.
