Exclamation Could this be the cause of our break squeal?

Replaced my stock pads last night with PF pads. The pax side up front was fine, however the drivers side has the same caliper but upside down. That is fine but then the pads had the tapered portion on the "trailing" edge on the drivers side and the "leading" edge on the pax side.

A tapered pad on the leading edge reduces/eliminates squeal. The same ford pads are used on both sides but given the flipped caliper, the pad ends up with the tapered end on the wrong end.

PF pads are tapered on both ends to eliminate the backwards install.

New pads, NO squeal, no fade, better feel, better stopping.

I could be wrong, but I am almost positive that the pads for the left and right sides are supposed to be different. I think I remember reading it in the Chiltons that applies to both my mom's Expy and my F-150... both with 4 wheel discs. You may have gotten the wrong parts for one side.

Did you have the rotors surfaced? New pads on old rotor surfaces will often squeal.

OK, more explantion is needed here.........

Lots of L owners complain of brake squeal with factory pads. Mine did all the time. Found the STOCK pads with the taper on the trailing edge when I took the off of the drivers side. Without a taper on the leading edge, you can and will get squeal.

New pads are tapered both ends, Performance Friction does this to their pads.
No squeal with the Performance Friction pads.

Wrong pads????? Not unless Ford put them on wrong at the factory.

Squeal on old rotors with new pads?
Negitive. Like I said, it only squealed with the STOCK pads.

No offense but please read the post. Both response questions are answered in my original post.

I've run stock pads, PF, and Bendix. The fronts are quiet but the rears squeal no matter what. I've tried resurfacing the rotors, deglazing old pads, etc. Nothing completely kills the squeal. Here's why to the best of my understanding:

brake squeal is caused by high frequency vibration between the pad and its mounting surface. A liberal application of grease to the back of the pad helps this. However, the stock rear calipers are single piston. This mean that no matter what you do, the piston creates a lever on the pad and gives the pad a point around which it can vibrate. Since no matter what you do, that point wont ever be at the exact center of force, you'll get vibration and thus squeal. Upgrade to some sort of dual-piston caliper and this goes away, or is greatly alleviated.

I put a post up on brake squeal about a week ago. I am going to be meeting up with engineers from Ford to address this problem. My passenger side rear has squealed from the day I drove it off the lot.I have tried everything to stop it(pads, stop squeal, deglazing)nothing helped. They called me(Ford) and asked if they could use my truck and see if the problem can be fixed. Will let everybody know what I find out.

Red2000svt,

Which PF pads did you use? I have used the Z pads on my 95' Cobra, and gotten squeal on onw set and no squeal on another set. I switched to Hawk, and the problem was solved.
