The Tamiya Lightning Sells for $199.99 ready to run with the radio installed (controller). You will have to buy a battery pack (7.2 volt) that run about $20 and an AC/DC battery charger that normally start at about $30. The kit version is 79.99 but you will have to put it together (Tamiya cars are VERY easy to put together). You will need to purchase a radio for it which start at $40, the battery and the charger. I have an older Tamiya car that I converted into a Lightning and the thing is a blast. With a modified motor and different gearing, it will run at about 25-30 mph. HPI makes a set of 5 spoke rims that are dead ringers for the 99-2000 L rims and you can get tires from Team Losi that look like the F1s. Sure is fun to pull that little truck out infront of the SS and R/T owners cause they don't make those cars in R/C.

Hope this helps.

can these 5 spoke rims fit onto the ready made tamiya lightning truck? i am not good at building models so i if i get it, it will be the ready made truck. how about those tires too? is this stuff easy to snap on/off?

You can swap out wheels easily. One lock nut holds the wheel onto the axle. However, you need to glue the tires onto the rims.If you like, you can have the stock rims and tires to run and the other set for show.

Wink

The HPI rims will bolt right onto any touring car chassis which the Tamiya Lightning is. The code name for the chassis they use is called the TL-01. The HPI rims include a set of spacers so you can widen the width of the car by about 3mm. The Team Losi tires come with foam inserts so the weight of the truck won't crush the side walls. Chim Chim is right, you have to glue the tires to the rim, it's kinda embarrassong to have the tire fly off the rim when your running the car in front of your friends. There is a special glue I've seen in hobby shops designed just for gluing tires. Short name for it is CA and it's the 25-45 second cure.

Another suggestion for the cars. The oil that they put in the shocks is kinda thin, you might want to pick up a bottle of 40-60 wt shock oil to make the truck less prone to traction rolling. Thats one thing I have to do to mine. Also, there should be some spring clips included with the truck that go between the top of the spring and the top of the shock, this alters ride height. I have mine raised to max so the body doesn't scrape on the expansion strips on concrete roads.

Hope this helps.

I was into Nitro(gas powered) cars when I was younger and still have one. Anyone know of a Nitro powered Lightning?

I would not recommend buying the RTR kit (ready to run) Half the fun of the kit is building it, and painting it to your liking. If you buy it RTR and it breaks you won't really know how to fix it. The RTR's come with the bare minimum and nothing as far as performance. They also only come in Red with yellow stickers all over it.

This is what I would get if you want a really quick truck and still be able to go in reverse.

This is from Towerhobbies.com One of the biggest site for RC cars on the net.

LXGA59 Tamiya Ford SVT F-150 Lightning Kit 79.99
LXH202** Futaba 2PC 2 Channel AM/2 S3003 Servos 59.99
LXJX17 Trinity Speed Gem 2 Onyx 14T Double Motor 27.99
LXBJ59 Novak Reactor Reversible 89.99
LXXA26 Trinity Time Warp 1900 Racing Pack 24.99
LXL348 Hobbico 905 AC/DC Multi-Charger 32.99

Total = $315.94 + shipping.

If you don’t want to spend that much then leave out the Trinity Speed Gem and Novak Reactor. That would drop it down to $197.96

The speed Gem is the motor, and the Reactor is the speed controller. These two things make the truck fast and use the battery more efficient.

That will pretty much do it. The only other thing you would need is some paint. You can get it at any store that sells model cars.

If you have any specific questions let me know and I will do my best to answer them.

Thumbs up

john,

first off, your lightning is sick!!?!?!?!?! (as in good).

my main problem is i am horrible at building models, i have tried a few times and they always come out crummy. what kind of paint did you use on your L? is it spray? is it brushed on? how did you do the door panels, hood etc, with a brush and paint black lines? that would be too detailed for me and i would surely pooch it up and make it look horrible.

how did you do the headlamps, are those decals?

if i buy the R2R (ready 2 run) truck, will it be slower? it won't go in reverse??? how long do these things go on the fully charged battery? how long does it take to charge the battery? how far will it go from the remote?

i don't care for the stickers etc on the R2R truck (they are cool, but they don't resemble a real L), and i would love to get a kit and paint it black or silver, or maybe yellow. please help me out with all my questions, also what wheels did you use, the ones that came in the kit? thanks

dave (age 21 and not that good at model building, but not a total clutz either). is it out of my range to build it?

Cool

The rims on the top of your post John893 are the ones I have on my Mini L.

MACD. My first RC truck was a 2wd off road truck and I built it myself at age 13. The Tamiya cars are probably the easiest cars to build, there is really no gluing to speak of except for the tires to the rim.The instructions are VERY clear, there is really no written text but the drawings are MORE then adequate to finish the kit.

The paint you would use for a basic one color paint job MUST be lexan compatible. They sell it at the hobby shops, Pactra and Parma Fascolor are the more popular brands. If you plan on painting on the tonneau cover, paint the darker color first or the black will fade into the body color. Also, Lexan is painted from the INSIDE of the body. The body shell is clear when you pull it out of the box. it has a clear film on the outside of it to prevent overspray from getting onto the outside of the body. You will have to trim the body out, it comes as a vacuum formed shell with a ton of excess material. The trimming process isn't bad but a pair of Lexan scissors will make it a lot easier.

Just remember that when you are building these trucks, don't rush it. It isn't a race to get it out on the street but when you do get it out there, it will look DAMN good.

Have fun.

olesparky, interesting.....you paint it from the inside? wow. thats neat. how do you get details such as door jams, and the fender and hood lines? painting with a brush on the outside? thats the part that scares me the most.

i assume the lexan paint for the body is sprayed on the inside of the shell?

can you post a closeup picture of your truck sparky?

do you have to paint those wheels to get them that charcoal color, or can you order them that color. all i see listed are white , black or chrome.
