hahah
I didnt want to be the first to say it, so thank you to WHAT04 for steppin to the plate
I could be wrong, but just they way you talk on the board it sounds like you dont even have a L, or perhaps it's your dad's and your posing it as you own.
But if you do own the truck, my apolgies. Gas should not be a worry if you buy a vehicle like a L or other High-Po V8..it comes with the territory.
and a peice of advice. I drive a 01 4x4 Sport during the winter...my family owns a ford dealer and this is given to me for the winter so that is the only reason why im driving it. Overall its an ok vehicle. The fender flares on it are butt ugly, the front end is nice, I like the silver accents in the interior but they scratch REALLY easily, but overall I would NEVER buy one.
Gas mileage is not great, the 4.0 V6 is not very refined, and there is no longer auto 4x4 which i think is stupid.
Personally if you going the explorer route I'd rather have a Sport Trac. Longer wheel base makes a HUGE improvement over the short wheelbase on the Sport. Plus it would still be practical for you because it has more room then your L

All I have to say is, if you're worried about how much you'll spend on gas, you shouldn't be driving a Lightnin'...
I can certainly sympathize though. I lived in Montreal before moving down here to Texas a couple years ago. When I left, super was costing .98/litre... UGH...
Still, with the recent prices hikes around here, it's costing 35-38 bucks to fill up... Starting to remind me of home...

Wow, ninety bucks to fill the tank !!!! That probably works out to like 3 miles per dollar. That is out of controll. I filled mine this morning, it cost me thrity something. My old powerstroke used to cost 40 something to fill BOTH tanks, and had an 800 mile cruising range.
Oh well, it's just money. Enjoy the truck while you can.

Assume the 2002 Sport gets like 17 mpg. The 4 mpg difference will get you MAX 80 miles more per tank. A tank of gas will still cost the same. If you fill up once a week you might get one more day out of it. If you run a whole year it will save you 6 fillups a year. = $540 a year MAX. You will lose more than 3x that in the trade. Which just paid for differnce in 3 years of gas.
My 2 cents
