Talking 2001 Lightning 'Clunk Insurance'

Got my washers from Herb Jackson the other day and I must say they really look to be high quality. I purchased them just in case my 2001 Bolt develops the 'clunk'. From previous posts on this board, this seems to be the 'fix' of choice. Has anyone with a 2001 Lightning had the problem with the lower control arm bolts yet?

I ordered mine before receiving the 2001 truck. They went in with 14 km on the vehicle. The dealer's tech was impressed with the design as well. You will need some cam-bolts to get the alignment right again.

Z96Cobra,
I heard a 'pop' or 'clunk' twice that seemed to be coming from the right front wheel area but nothing that I can constantly generate. So can't say for sure that's the 'clunk' but with the washers, if it is, I'm ready.

Have you greased your wheel stops? Might be the noise you're hearing.

BlackLight, Did you use the Ford Cam Bolt kits or an aftermarket kit?

I heard a clunk the other night while pulling forward, I got out and realized I just ran over my socket case. DOH!

I have a 2001 L and I heard a snap or a pop when I was backing up my driveway with the wheels cut kind of sharp to the left. I was at the dealer and mentioned it to them and they greased my steering stops on both spindles and I Have not heard it since!

I don't know if I have the "clunk", but I do have a "pop" in the front end when I turn the truck sometimes. Not very often, but I've heard it 4-5 times in about 3,500 miles. The "pop" that I've heard is on the passenger side, near the front tire. Does this sound like the infamous "clunk"??

01Bolt, how many miles did you have on your truck before the 'Clunk' started?

Heard mine for the first time [11K/11mo]. Herbs washers have been in the glove box for about 4mos, might have to get them on soon. Wanted to go 1yr without a trip to Fords service dept to set some kind of record around here, may wait a month.

BlackLight, Thanks for the link to Specialty Products. What kind of prices are they asking for the cam bolt kits?

All:

Please check my recent post regarding "The Clunk". I think it was titled "2001 Intercooler Leak and Clunk", or something like that. It's all explained there.

As far as "The Clunk" goes, if you have over 100 miles on your 'Bolt and you haven't fixed "The Clunk" (not "The Scrape", which is fixed by lubing the steering stops, but "The Clunk"), then guess what? YOU HAVE THE CLUNK! All Lightnings get it, and get it young. I've met a few Lightning jockeys out there who have driven 20,000 miles or more and never developed the clunk. Of course, I always take a look under the driver's side front, and guess what? The A-arm is nearly worn through from the thing sliding around. Trust me, if you haven't fixed "The Clunk", you have "The Clunk". Several possible fixes, the washers look like the top candidate. Not the only solution, mind you, but probably the best (and most expensive).

Most part stores should have them in stock, since all newer F150 frames have the slot.
