Calling all Auto-xers " HELP"
I need help, I have been running some auto-x hear lattly and i am having a prob. First off let me tell you of the mods to the truck. Hypercoils on the front spring rate of 850. Rouch rear leaf, 295 35 18 g-force tires. The problem is that when I am diving in to a corner the truck pushes like a bitch. I am running around 40 psi on the front and 30 to 35 psi on the rear. I have also set the front camber at 1 degree with caster at 6.5 degrees. What can i do to get this pig to turn??
Thanks Paul

Paul - How's the weight balance front to rear on your truck?

Assuming that the camber is -1 degree, try -1.5 to -2.0 if you can adjust that far. Check your weight balance. Add a brake bias adjustment valve and dial out a little of the front bias. Are your shocks adjustable?

I don't want to lecture, since I don't know your level of driving skill...
My setup:
4 x Hoosier A3S03 275/35-18 @ 44psi all around.
Stock suspension
Front alignment to -3 camber, 6.5 caster.
Driving style: accelerate early, and hard. Catch the back if neccessary, but brake early as well. I.e: slow in, fast out. Do not throw it around too much. It looks spectacular, and it's fun, but it's slow. Be neat and controlled.
To turn in better, I used a small amount of trail braking, especially on the F1's.

I am not up on all the lingo, but what is understeer?? This is also autocross not upen track. I wish it was. What it feels like to me is that I need bigger front tires. I can controll the rears with no prop but on hard turns she pushes way to hard. Now I talked to Ruslow once and he is running 950 front springs, stiffer then mine. If I soffen up the front will it help to hook? What about shocks? Still running stock. I know that if I can get this beast to hook up I will do alot better. Also just a littel more info I had a temp prob and found about 10 degrees of temp diffrance from inside to outside tire.

Without going into a lot of detail, the easiest way to get away from understeer[where you are turning the wheel but it is not responding] is to play with toe.Almost all production vehicles manufacature have a huge amount of scrug radius built into them so basicly what you are doing is SLIDING the front tires[look at them with the wheel turned] one is turned tighter than the other. So by reducing toe you are reducing the raduis. And will give you better turn in.But like I said there is a line to it.I run 1/32 toe in and have no problems have tried 0 but is alittle to unstable at the higher speeds.
Hope this helps and yes you can play with spring and sway bar rates but this will tell you real fast what to do next[it will either help or hurt you]Understeer in Auto Xing is a big no no.Also play with tire psi and the amount of roll on the tires.Stan
PS what I do is HIGH Speed stuff and the set up is totally different. At low speed I understeer too,but as I go faster it goes neurtal[70 to 140] then High speed goes oversteer,[unless I am under power, then is neurtal]Try a 4 wheel drift at 150 is kinda fun!!!!

I have not seen a post asking what your Toe in is? Set it at 0 or just a tad toe out, will help the ft end plant better[will steer easier going into turn] but will be a little loose on the High speed straights over 70.Just watch out how much gas you give in the rear will come around quick.Stan

I'd start with the most radical change you've made to your suspension - the springs, you've changed from:
650 to 850 lbs - 30% stiffer than stock - in front
200 lbs. to 100 lbs (approx) - 50% softer than stock - in rear.
Stiffen the front - more understeer. Stiffen the rear - more oversteer. You've significantly increased understeer from stock.
So-cal's rear springs are stiffer than stock. And/or soften the front - trying not to bottom out.
