Those are great absolute numbers, but the HP increases to only 504 when starting with 381? Must be very low boost due to the 10.2:1 compression ratio.

 

Their transmissions are maxed out. Power to weight ratio is barely changed. This is as rediculous as putting a blower on a Hummer. Why bother.

 

If you see ten of these on the street its a good bet 7/10 will be being towed to a garage for repairs. If they had engine troubles before, wait till they start bolting on superchargers.

 

My understanding is 6psi of boost.

 

Sounds about right for a 10:1 on pump gas.

A 24% increase in power, roughly the same weight - how did the power to weight ratio barely change ?

 

When you're dealing with 5400lbs, depending on accessories and configuration, IMO its pointless especially since the kit with coolant, supercharger, heat exchanger, hoses, intake... has got to add a good 200lbs.

That kind of weight is the same reason the Gen 3 Lightning was cancelled. Despite 500hp, they couldn't meet performance targets.

 

Even for the heaviest Tundra, the power to weight is still better than a stock lightning.

 

And Ford is now paying the price for its bloated engineering on the new F150. Sales are dropping like a stone.

Despite having owned my Lighting since 2002, I'm still astounded that the damn thing -- the smallest, lightest model in the F150 lineup -- weighs nearly 5,000 lbs. And on their premier, bet-the-company vehicle, and with super-high gas prices well within the realm of prediction, Ford chose to bloat it even further.

 

Thats real good! Mine with 8psi whipple claims 464/510. So thats alot of power. They are lighter then our trucks too.

If you get a single cab short bed 5.7 tundra they run 14.0 in the 1/4. Not bad for stock truck. Course a most lightnings will see 12's with ease so its really not the same catagory.

 

Just like the Cobras the Lightnings are underrated by about 40hp depending how much you attribute to drive line losses which with our transmissions and heavy duty rear axle is in excess of 20%.

For an accurate comparison, compare a current F-150 with a blower kit. I'll still take the F-150 with best in class interior, ride and frame. Keep in mind that the Toyota is maxed out while the Lightning is at the starting point.


Remember that you're always 5 years behind with product development. I saw the 2009 F-150 in January. The stylists have done everything possible to make it look even bigger than it actually is. Its shocking actually!!!! Our trucks will look like Rangers by comparison. Not good in current times. Its too bad because Ford has gone all out with an extensive list of improvements.


You're talking at the wheels. The Tundra with the blower is probably closer to 400.

The Silverado with their top gas engine isn't far behind. The new F-150 with the new 6.2L and 6 speed will be in the exact same ball part.

I'm really not impressed with the Tundra. After spending 2 Billion, Toyota brought nothing new to the table and on their 4th attempt at the pick-up truck market, they have a really ugly truck with a cheap interior. The styling is absolutely awful with hints of previous generation F-150, plastic skid plate, fake plastic hood scoop above the grill (WTF), weakest frame, highest fuel consumption, several quality issues, Camry steering wheel and wimpy shifter that looks lifted from their cars..... 2007 sales were disappointing before the market took a dive even with a multi-million dollar campaign. They expected to just take over the market like they did with mid-size cars but their execs. admitted that they underestimated the level of sophistication of the pick-up truck consumer. Looks good on them.

If they wanted to see our level of sophistication, all they had to do was read the Lightning boards...

 

The upside to all this is that, to my eye, the Lightning is still the coolest truck ever made. The interior is cheesy, cheap, and dated, but the curvy exterior still looks fresh, and the driveline is still the best mod-friendly platform out there.
