My '00 started knocking at 500 miles. It did not go away after warm up even though the dealer said it did. It could be heard 30 feet away. It was loud enough to be embarrasing. After a dozen trips to two dealerships finally met with regional customer service rep for Ford. He heard it just fine and knew something was wrong but didn't know what. Engine replaced at 1500 miles. Now have 5000 miles and running smoothly and very strong. Be PERSISTENT with Ford or they will walk on you. They will tell you straight to you face "you don't know what you are talking about" and as seen on this board most members here know more about their trucks than the dealerships do. (intercooler leaks for example).

Mine roars for a bit sometimes when I start it...it has since day one... It goes away after about 30 seconds of driving it. (seems to take some RPMs, a good rev tends to do it too).

My mechanic said from the sound of my description, he thinks its just the fan clutch doing its job.

Yep, that's me. You would not believe the Hell I'm catching being a former Chevy guy having to "explain" this noise.

Is there no one else that has a quiet engine? I know there is....please reply so I can confidently "inform" my dealer.

No slap, rattle or any other weird noises at start up or after warm up. Also no IC leak...yet.

Ray,

No kidding. Wait till theirs sounds like this and let the moaning begin..LOL Just kidding, sort of.

Guys, the I/C problem is just an inconvenience or boo-boo compared to this problem. I can personally deal with the I/C leak by changing it or fixing it myself. This rattle is MAJOR, requiring an engine lift and greased monkeys slamming the doors, dropping it off lifts and leaving B.O. and prints everywhere. Again, please reply, especially if you have a quiet one with no rattle.

There's 57 posts on how old you are and 187 posts on the I/C's as of this minute. This "rattle" post is important to a lot of us.

It happened to me in Nov,99. Every time the topic came up (rattle at shifts) I seemed to get blown off by other theories. The original engine I had was a slug. Sometimes these things work out for the best.

Oh! What happened to Sal and his finding in his rebuild of his 99 engine. He said he found something and would tell us later. It seems later to me.

My ole '99 had the "diesel" effect at low rpm after cranking, esp. when cold.

I just traded in on a '01 today (well last night now).

Just over 1900 miles on my '01 with none of the forementioned noises.

I had 52,000 on my '94 L when I traded her in, and never had any problem with it -- that's why I decided to buy another, but after reading posts like this, I wonder...

My 01 has 2000 miles now and has the rattle at startup. It goes away after warmup or if I
bring the rpm's up.Hate the thought of having
to go to the dealer on this one.

LQuick,Which dealer did you go with?It would be nice to find one that has heard of the problem.
