Engine rattle at startup
#32
Portsmouth Ford. They have done atleast 2,Mine and a girl I know.I would not go rushing into there cause they dont like doing them .Ford has them brain washed into thinking chips are doing it.We all know better but Ford is REALLY cracking down.I had to supply oil change reciepts and all.The dealership will not do anymore if they suspect chips and they do take out the computers to check. My little black plug is even missing. They even gave the girl a hard time for a simple Downs Ford Intake!! They said it was some super after-market air thingy . Also,It took almost a year to get a new motor from them. They still will say its normal till you bring it back in peices like I did and the girl

My 2000 with approx. 12000 miles does have a 'diesel' noise at startup. It's not consistent, but I can only usually get it when it's cold out and the truck has been sitting still for a long while.
From reading all the accounts online here, I'm currently of the opinion that I'm just going to ignore it until it's just too obvious to miss. That's what the extended warranty is for, right? ;D

Everyone,
I too have a very intermitent rattle at startup. Its been there since day one.
Production date is AFTER the supposed fix...
Until then, I will drive it like I stole it
The noise I have is no where near as loud as some of you (At least based on your description), so I am still in a holding pattern..Don't want the dealer to get their hands on it, but don't want to drop the lower side out going to hOOters one day either........
Decisions...Decisions.....
SVT...Fix the Intercooler...Come clean about the engine rattle. Fix it Too!! You would then have one A$$ Kicking vehicle!!!!
Personally, I don't believe a modern engine should make this kind of noise.
Just my .02

17,000+ on the odometer and no noises yet. I changed my oil after 500 miles and 1000 miles. Now oil changes are done between 3000-5000 miles using Valvoline 5W-30. Only problem I had with mine was the Intercooler leak. 12,000 on this one so far and no leak.
Has anyone found out what exactly is causing this rattle?

2001 - 166.8 Miles on it.
I just checked for you to see if it has the rattle. Fortunatly it doesn't. Thank god. Its probably 60 degrees out and just finished raining and I haven't moved it since Sunday. I don't know why the dealers try to pull that stuff with thats normal. They tried to tell me my tranny grinding and sticking in gears was normal on my mustang.
I hope you get your L fixed bro. I know the feeling on the Mechanics getting in and outta the L or any car for that matter. They have grease on 'em and don't bother to care enough to cover the seats. This happened with my 2000 when it went in for paint problems. The greased up my seats, but the paint continued to be a problem and the 2000 was replaced with the 2001. The 2000 had some diesel sound sometimes but not all of the time that I can remember. Could it be maybe injectors ticking? Or spark knock? Try putting some octane booster in it maybe just crummy gas? Try a different station or check fuel filter.

Silver 2K, 4800 miles, have had slap since I got it. Called SVT after I first noticed it, and was told it was "normal" for the forged pistons to slap a little untill warm. Don't think it has worsened, but I am a little unsettled by what I have read here since I was about to install a JL chip & 90mm. Any input?
