Question New motor has the slap

Had engine replaced in '00 Lightning at 1500 miles due to severe knocking. At three thousand miles on the new engine it has now developed piston slap during warm-up. Should I live with it or have Ford change it again? And is it just going to continue to worsen over time?

Change it. Knocks don't get better and rarely go away.

dogman,

Try 6 qts (or 5.5 for blowby's sake) of Havoline Synthetic 5w-30 and the Motorcraft 820S filter and see what happens. I've tried them all at this point, including all Mobil 1's. (I win for the most oil changes at 13k) Mine started at 1,200 miles with the stock oil fill, and now with the above oil, is sounding pretty good. I think I'll keep my engine for a few k's more. Don't want scratches on the firewall, ya know!!

Thanks, am running Mobil 1 and a K&N oil filter now. I'm not keen on the idea of another engine change, myself. Not a single scratch the first time but they might not take as much care the second time around.

Oil is not going to make it go away. If you think that changing brands is going to work miracles it's not going to. These oils all have tolerances so close it'll not make a difference.

I know he stated his sounded better, but there has been a few on here state that their's went away somewhat after time on the motor, and they all still use the same oil.

BfB,

Yeah, you're right. It hasn't gone away by any means. I know it sounds crazy, but a different brand, in this case Havoline Synthetic 5w-30, made the sound diminish better than anything I've tried. Pennzoil was the absolute worst. And Mobil 1, my all-time favorite, wasn't far behind in the slappy-noise category. Crazy, I know. Don't flame me - I'm just trying to get to at least 30k and then get a new engine. Sad, I know.
