my truck usually makes a rattling noise when i first start it when it is cold which i figured one of the bearings was going in the idler wheels on engine. but today it made a different sound and i pulled out of driveway and i lost my power steering. i checked underneath and it was leaking from the steering gear(rack?). but it no longer makes the noise it has been making. My initial thought was the pump had gone and thats what was making the noise. but im worried about the oil leaking from the steering gear. this might soound like a dumb ?, but will the gear leak if the pump quit working? im just scared its going to cost an arm and a leg if its the steering gear. any thoughts please.
