Gen 1 L factory mid-pipe question

I want to delete the front cats on my 138,000 mile Gen 1 mid-pipe. The L has gradually lost power and mileage over the last two years. Has anyone deleted the cats and installed tubing with a band clamp?

Any idea what the actual pipe diameter is? Magnaflow recommends a 2.5" inlet/outlet slip on cat converter. So, I assume it is possible. The only item I truly see getting in the way, would be the factory heat shield.

I am trying to save money by doing the above vs. installing a Bassani mid-pipe.

Thanks!

I've already considered that. Local exhaust shops in my area get really antsy when you mention replacing or removing cats that haven't come apart or failed completely.
