There was another guy on around the 44th floor and he survived too when the building collapsed. He was the super for one or both of the WTC towers.
The last thing the guy remembered was what floor he was on before the collapse.
Riding the rubble down does not seem like great sport.
Apparently, if it is not your time, it is not your time.
I have to imagine with around five thousand dead at the WTC, the odor in or around NYC is not going to be very pleasant in the near future. It will probably take a long time to retrieve the remains. When the towers collapsed, the towers imploded and compacted all the way down about seven basement levels.

story supposedly untrue...
Saw this on cnn.com, apparently this rescue didn't really happen:
Hopefully we will be able to get some of those guys out soon... they are all true heros for their efforts.

update: what really happened:
In New York, meanwhile, hopes of a miraculous rescue were dashed. Fire department officials said initial reports that indicated five firefighters had been rescued were false.

update: what really happened:
Despite earlier confirmation from police and hospital officials, fire department officials said the confusion began after rescuers on Thursday fell down a steep pile of debris from the collapsed twin towers of the World Trade Center and landed underground. When they were rescued, others at the scene misinterpreted the event
