T5 Tranny in L?

Hey guys, I tried looking for a search on this topic, but had no results (For all you search police.) I was always under the impression that T5 tranny's were used in tow trucks (so the caption says in summit.) And majority of the people say Ford cannot make or use a tranny that handle our torque ratings. So wouldn't it make sense for ford to use the T5? And what tranny's do racers use that have more than 450-500lbs of torque?!

Just a question, so please don't start attacking me!!

Actually a Tremec does have a limit to the torque it can handle. A Mustang T5 would EXPLODE with the torque the Lightnings have.
You may want to look into Ford's new 6-speed that they offer for the PowerStroke Diesels. Those trucks have 500lbs of Torque. Plus a 6-speed sure would make it easier to put MONSTER gears!

Stick's sure are fun to drive, but at the track the auto will be quicker.

depends on the driver! the stick will have better gear ratios so you can get up and move faster! 5 vs 4 speeds there. The 5 will have a lower first and second gear.

The T5 in the cobras are only rated to 310 ft-lbs of torque. That is the world class unit. You can get them rebuilt to hold 335ft-lbs, but that is it.

What you want is the T56 Viper unit. Rated at up to 440-550 ft-lbs of torque! It is a 6 speed unit. There would be a lot of fab work to get it in, plus a custom shifter, but it would rock! I know that D&D performance has them if you are interested.

The T-5 wouldn't last 2 speed shifts behind the Lightning motor. As mentioned, they are rated a 310 lbs of torque. Lightnings are making over 440 lbs.

The first time you hooked the thing up, the T-5 would spill it's guts on the roadway in rather spectacular fasion. You would need a Viper trans.

haha, thanks for the posts guys! I wasn're really interested in buying one, but rather just having the knowledge of torque ratings those things can handle. So Summit it lying when they say tow-trucks use them?

thanks again!!

Mainly the part about a world class unit.

That is the funniest thing I have read in a while. the t-5,t-45,t-3650 all have one thing in common there all P.O.S. Get atleast a D&D blue printed tranny. I would try the viper tranny, would be cool to have.

Sorry about the remark at the top but they are.

Pretty soon Sal will have everything you need to make the 4R100 you have bulletproof. Have the parts in mine now, really good upgrades, but they'll be pricey after you figure in the installation etc....
