I did...from a 97 Cobra to a 01 Lightning. Let me tell you, I originally ordered a Performance Red 2001 Cobra coupe. Saw a Silver 2001 sitting in the showroom the day I went to pick up some papers from my dealer about the production date, etc on the Cobra....Right then and there I knew I wanted a 2001 Lightning. Ended up canceling my Cobra order and driving to Louisiana to pick up my Red 2001 L. Have NO regrets, love EVERY minute in the L and I know you will, too. I couldn't believe how much power it had and how well it handled! SVT pulled out all the tricks when they designed it!
Another major plus is a the fact that a truck is ALWAYS handy...hauling stuff, moving, etc....and still whooping A$$ on the streets! Make the switch...YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

I have owned many sports cars, 911's mainly. The L is great, it offers good overall performance and a big trunk . The only down side is only 3 passengers max, but with more it would just slow you down.

My last three vehicles:

1996 Trans Am, 6lb blower, 355ci, heads/cam, 2800 stall, skinnies (11 sec monster)

1998 Trans Am WS.6 Convertible, bolt-ons, lowered

2001 Lightning <-- so far my favorite

I sold a 96' T/A convertible, 6 speed. Although i miss the manual transmission and of course the convertible, the L is a much better ride. Although now i get more guys then girls that look at my truck now . Convertible T/A was a chick magnet.

I went from a 94 Z28 M6 to a 01L. The differences that I like are that the L is a lot easier to get in and out of, has better visibility, doesn't have 10ft long doors and is rare. The only things I miss when I drive my L, I still have the Z, are the manual transmission and the better gas milage, but then again I didn't buy this thing to save gas. Plus like I've heard before the L gets a lot more smiles/gallon.

If any of you have looked at my other posts today you will see that I am interested in an L. I cannot believe that I am actually considering getting a truck. Never thought that would ever happen.
But, I test drove an '01' today and LOVED how it drove. Visibility was fantastic, it was more comfortable in every way than my T/A. And, it felt every bit as fast. (if not faster)
I have been trying to figure out what to get because I am sick of putting sod/plants/what ever else I but at Lowes, in my wifes Accord. I have now learned that with a Home comes the need to haull stuff.

The Lightning may be my answer.
Now that I think about it, my neighbor a few streets over had a 2000 Viper. He sold it and bought an 01 L and an 01 Mustang GT convertable.

thanks for all the replies!

Does a warmed over 67 camaro count? How about a 69 firebird or a 72 challenger. If you consider these classics to be sports cars then yes i switched. I miss the nostalgia but not the problems that go with owning a classic musclecar.Lightnings ROCK.

I sold my 642 rwhp 94 z28 because it would only go
13.0@129 with a 2.5 60 ft on BFG Comp TAS (not drag radials)
at Fomoso in Bakersfield.

It did go 12.29@124 at 2700 ft (LACR) on the same tires ,

and it ran 11.55@127 with a slipping clutch on slicks.

The Lightning ran 13.79@101.6 with a 2.18 60 ft (70 deg) at Carlsbad.

I miss shifting the m6 and the top end that the procharger made

I do love the lightning more as its my daily driver now and the z28 was a weekend only deal.

I did want a 2002 Z06 though

Ronnie

Last 3 vehicles were sports cars. '93 Firehawk / 97 Trans Am / 99 SS Camaro. I saw a picture of the Silverado SS and instantly wanted one. I waited and waited; but, NOTHING. I started noticing that there were a lot more f-bodies on the road and that my vehicle of choice had lost it's exclusivity. I liked the L when it came out but wasn't in a hurry to jump into an untested vehicle. I waited a couple of years to let the bugs get worked out. (And to see if the SS was ever going to hit the market.) Then bought an 01. I like mine almost as much as my first f-body. You don't see one every day and they are surprisingly fast.

hello 6spd :

I think I know just how you feel . Do it-- Do it
I traded a 1995 Formula, 6 speed, headers, cat back, 4:10 gears, etc., etc. for a new 01 Lightning just a day ago. I picked the truck up at 2:00 yesterday.
Anyway I owned the Formula for 5 years and before that a 1988 firebird formula350 from new. Kind of use to nothing but muscle cars.
The wife and I have never owned a pickup in our lives. We kind of liked it from the time the 99 model came out and thought if we were to ever own a pickup-----gee the Lightning would be nice--- and then never gave it a second thought.
well it's mid 2001 and an 01 Lightning is sitting in the garage.
I still can't believe it.
I truly believe this performance thrill is not going to go away anytime soon.
The truck outperforms the formula( and it was by no means a slouch) and handling and response is as good if not better than the formula .

<----- Former WS6 Owner

I owned a 1999 30th Anniversary Trans Am (WS6) 6-speed with a Borla cat-back, Whisper lid, ported MAF, K&N, and B&M Ripper shifter. I bought the T/A brand new in May 1999 and loved every minute of it...the blue chrome wheels, the white with blue stripes, the looks, peformance...ran a best of 13.49 at 105.6. I honestly planned to keep that collectibe car forever...

...until I drove the Silver 2001 Lightning sitting in my garage now. I had read the hype about the Lightnings on LS1.com and here on F150 Online and figured "What the heck, I'll take that L for a spin." 16 hours later I was driving the L home and putting my 30th Anniversary T/A up for sale. The L is just THAT much fun to drive. Just as fast as my T/A, handles as well, cheaper insurance, it's a TRUCK so I can haul stuff, gobs of torque and horsepower, and that blower whine that just sounds incredible.

Yep, I love my L and would make that trade all over again in a heartbeat.

2001 Toyota Tundra. Sorry, but the fit and finish and overall quality vote goes to Toyota. That was one tight and well handling truck. The L owns it in HP and looks, plus the L is exotic.

No offense, but what does buying a Toyota Tundra have to do with this topic?

It's not a sports truck, it's not fast........ about the only thing the two have in common is that they are trucks.

I am sure that your Tundra is a very nice, normal truck. However, it will never have anything on a Lightning. If you traded your car for the Tundra, I would suspect it would be something like a Camry.

Please do not think I am ******* the Tundra. My father owns one and likes it just fine. Just not the same class.

Thanks for all of the replies. Looks like it will be an '02' L because I need to wait until next summer.
I graduate from college in May and need to have the job all worked out before I lay down 34k! (or what ever the price will be then)
I think I am truly convinced this will be my next vehicle.
