In Newsweek, about three weeks ago, it was reported that because of all Ford's problems with tire recalls, quality, etc., the $$$$ weren't there do do the redesign til 2004. So, because they didn't take care of business (address stuff they KNEW was wrong), they pretty much trashed the whole company and whatever "quality" image they established with the public and their customers.
