Breaking in the motor!!!

I bought the truck on 10/2 and have put 182 miles on it so far. I bought with 18 miles on it so total is ~200. I have only gone like 3/4 throttle to make sure it will make boost and let it kick down a bit but i have not let it hang out yet.

I was thinking around 500 miles or so, but that could take nearly a month and i am chompin at the bit to stomp on it.

any thought on this.

Bob

WFO man WFO (old motocross days...I rode a Bultaco, you youngens don't even know what that is). I left the parking lot of the dealer with the rear tires on fire. 42,000 miles later still going strong.

go for it

Hey Bob, congrats on the new L. I know how you feel, I have always tried to break in my new cars and trucks the same way that i am going to drive it. I do think that it is a good idea not to drive a new one at a constant speed. If you travel very far try and use the highways instead of the interstate. I don't think it hurt mine one bit to get on it every now and then just don't hold it down for long periods of time and don't hit wide open and let off all of a sudden, just eas up on. It will take you a good while to really get the L broke in anywhere from 5k to 7k most likely. The L seems to come alive then and you can tell by the way the tires scream. Give it a few more miles if it makes you feel better. I had to give my a twist or two right away and its doing just fine.

Wink

You had it broken in by the time you left the parking lot, LOL. Actually I have a Haynes manual that says on an engine rebuild once you've ran it a little to get the gas good and let out 3 or 4 times to help seat the rings. Drive it like you stole it.

drive it like you stole it... seems to be the consensus around here I know I drove mine like that, how can you resist? I did avoid the constant speeds for long periods at a time however.

As soon as the traffic thinned from the dealership WOT. Drive it like you stole it. 52,000 miles and runs like the day I got it. Change to Mobil 1 ASAP.

lets see bob, 2 days later i had a chip and a pulley and make quite a few wot runs up to say ohhhh, 110 or so ,lol.

i've always heard you should break em in like you drive em, like said above, some hard runs will help seat the rings and such, again mentioned above.

Now, go beat the Pi$$ out of it

Just Hammer on it!

I bought mine on 10/01. In the 1st 140 miles I had a few passes on it at the track. Now it has a pulley , electric fan , chip and still at 400 miles. Half of the miles were put on while going to and from track. With just a few trips to the track it has arlready run 13.00 @105. When I get the other parts on her that were on my 99, I could see some 12.50s in this cooler weather.Cheers!
