oil consumption question on 01

I have a friend with an 01 and he is losing half quart of oil between every oil change. He gets his oil changed at the dealership. The dealer has told him that they can find nothing wrong with his truck. He has 5,500 miles on his truck. Do you think it could be the motor is broken in yet? Or that it is the lighter weight oil 5-w20? Possibly valve seals? Anyone with similar problems. Or some theories?

as far as Ford is concerned...

If I'm not mistaken, the specification is this:

Ford considers 1 quart in as few as 700 miles to be "acceptable" oil consumption.

Personally I'd say that anymore than one quart in 1000 miles is not good.

But one half of a quart per oil change (is that 3000 or 5000 mile interval) should not be a problem at all.

just my .02

Every Ford I've ever had has burned about 1 quart between a 3000-4000 mile oil change interval. I wouldn't worry about a 1/2 quart. My mechanic says that it is good for the engine. I don't know about that one.

I noticed on my first 7k miles I didn't burn a drop. Then I went on a trip, all highway miles and burned 1/2qt in about 1400 miles. Back home now and up to about 9500 miles and haven't burned any more. Only seemed to use it on open highway driving. No leaks etc. I've never had a vehicle that used oil like that. Usually barely a noticeable drop between 5k miles changes. Those of you who do use a little oil, is that the same with yours, only really seems to use it on the open road, not around town. Just found this kind of odd.

FOR 2KL, AN UPDATE...

2KL:

I give up, Chief. I'm a beaten man. Furthermore, my fabricator is finishing my ram-air system today, so I'll be voluntarily removing myself from "fastest bone-stock contention".

I went to the track a couple weeks ago STRICTLY chasing the weather in an attempt to squeeze out some fast times. It eventually got down to about 50 degrees F, dry, high pressure, tailwind, the works. It also seems that every ricer punk in the world had the same inspiration as myself. Anyway, the cooler it got, the more power I made, the worse the wheelspin, the slower I went. Clicked off five 13.8's in a row and never got up over the 100 MPH hump.

It didn't help that the track prep was awful, plus there's no way to get around the 'boxes at Edgewater. So everybody tracks water up to the line, just making things more slippery by the minute. I hate that track.

There were two silver 2001's there that night. Both guys seemed to be clueless (I'm being nice, trust me). Silly, nonsensical combinations of mods, and other "poor decisions" (like removing the stock air filter entirely). I counseled both of them regarding the traction conditions, which propmpted them both to power-brake to around 2500 RPM (on F1's) and blow the tires off. The one dude I watched nailed a 14.4 @ 101 with a 60-foot time of around 2.6 seconds. Idiots.

I'll probably make another trip to the track, but this will be for the FUN of it, atmospheric conditions be damned. I have a bud with a 260,000 mile 300ZX who LOVES to run, and what makes it fun is I can run him doorhandle-to-doorhandle with the wife's 2.2-ton 4WD ML320. Tech them both in and run nonstop all day. The 'Bolt for the F-bodies and the Benzo for the Cavaliers and other assorted ricers/rustbuckets.

2KL, you lost your I/C? too bad. Sorry to hear it's broke. If you saw my other post you see I finally got to MIR and cut a lame 13.68. I think I can get 13.4s. I was wondering if you might be able to head down this Fri. but it don't look like it.Anybody else? 2kl-We'll be down there next year with chips and dips. Keep that L.

I also lose 1/2 qt between oil changes at every 3000 miles. So it sounds normal to me.....but the question is "what's/who's normal?"
