Unhappy No 10s for Sal

Well, headed to Cecil this morning at 4am to meet up with a great bunch of guys, to see if we could all better our times for the end of the season. As many know, I was trying for 10s.

Well, the 45 degree air was nice for power, but not nice for traction. Nobody there had any at all. Almost every vehicle was spinning off the line .

With a retuned 175 shot, no pass seat or tailgate, and some monster slicks, I was hell bent on 10s. The first pass had wheelspin, only a 1.68 60ft (previous best was 1.56) but it grabbed soon after launch so I stayed in it. A dissapointing 11.41 but with a whopping 119.7 mph. She was definately making some more power.

Second pass had wheelspin to about the 1/8, where I soon lifted after that and coasted to an 11.73 at 74 mph. No reason to hurt something on a usless run. I was then yelled at by TWO officials on my way back to the pits. They said "one more 11 and you're parked for the day". Hmm, they didn't say anything about a 10, heh heh.

I didn't drive 4 hours to run 12s, so I waited a few hours for the other cars to hopefully get some rubber down, and went for the gusto. Did my burnout, staged, converter to 2200, and launched. I felt a bit of spin but not much, and the truck was pulling like a freight train to the 1/8. Right after the 1/8, the motor cut out for a second, then I saw a puff of smoke, and let off. I was pretty pissed because the truck was pulling so hard.

Got my timeslip, and checked it out. The ET and final mph were no good since I lifted, but the 1/8 was KILLER. A 7.20 1/8 at 96.7 mph. That was my 10 second pass dammit!! LOL.

Got the truck back , popped the hood and saw the problem. There was coolant sprayed all over the resivour area under the hood. I knew exactly what is was since this same thing happened on the dyno a month and a half ago to me. Turns out the stock TTY head bolts "stretch" under extreme pressure, and the heads lift for a second then seat back down. GGRRRR. Time for studs.

While I didn't get my 10 second timeslip, I got kick butt new mph, and 1/8 mile. If that last pass would have gone the whole way, no doubt I would have hit the 10s. Oh well, that's racing, I'll just have to do it another day.

That's tough luck, Sal. I'm sure things will work out though. Very nice 1/8 mile by the way. Keep up the good work

Thanks to you and Jay! these Truck-Traks look sweet. I can't wait to get them on. I may have to find bigger bump stops or something though. I'm installing 2 in. drop shackles, too.

Sorry to hear you didn't make the 10's Sal. Were you useing stock spec bolts or some ARP high spec bolts? Guess this gives us alittle more time to hit the 10's... When the tracks are closed for the season, I guess it would be a good time for a roll cage.

when the heads lift like that, does it instantly hurt the gasket, or does it recover OK. Do these engines have only 10 head bolts like most fords ? If they do that is also a big problem. 4 bolts around each cylinder just aint enough sometimes.
Sounds like your truck is really makin some steam now.
Good luck next time out.

I have the Truck-Traks and Belltech 2" shackles--stock-no change in the bump stops needed.

They would have been your 10 for sure. Awesome. It was still a nice run to the 1/8. 96 MPH! I've only run 102 in the 1/4. You will get it soon.

Did you get your truck back ok?

Can you get head studs made? I thought ARP wasn't interested. Or, can you have custom made head bolts that aren't torque to yeild? I would allow cylinder head removal in the truck. Head studs will require engine removal to get the heads off.

I know what Sal will be doing for the next month. I looks like the track people aren't going to let you slide on the 11's anymore. That is one rule that they really push out here. They generally let you run one 11 w/o a cage, then invite you to the gate.

Odin's Wrath, I will have some snubber spacer kits toward's the end of the week. Email me if you need them.

Whitetoast11, If you run at a NHRA sanctioned racetrack, the rulebook states that you need at least a 6 point rollbar in your vehicle if it runs quicker that 11.99 in the quarter mile.

Some track officials will allow you to slide on this rule for a while, but they will eventually require it. It's their insurance carrier that requires it, actually.

On some "outlaw" tracks, these rules may be different. I think IHRA will allow you to run as quick as 11.40 befor requiring a rollbar.

Whitetoast11:

Just in case you d/k, a helmet is required for sub 14 secs. and a driveshaft loop is required for sub 12secs at NHRA tracks.

Acctually, on slicks a driveshaft loop is required for 13.99 and faster. On street radials is it 12.99 and faster.
