First oil change for me

Question for all you seasoned L owners. I live in an apartment, and don't have any tools to do this myself. So I was just wondering a good place to take the L to get the oil changed? Also I have 14000 miles on the truck and was wondering what to use as far as oil products. I have no mods on the truck as of yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Hey man, you should tell have told everyone that you bought it used, so no one will think you put 14,000 miles on it before you changed your oil.

14,000 and only one oil change!!! Dan, you really don't need but a wrench to change your oil. If you choose to get it done somewhere drive to Austin and I'll do it for ya. No problem!!! As far as type of oil. If I were you I would flush your oil and go with a synthetic such as Mobile1 5w-30. Six quarts. Dageon

What is the criteria for seasoning an L owner, salt, pepper, BBQ sauce, ketchup....?

On the serious side, who did you trust to do oil changes before? Talk to a couple of shops, when you meet the mechanics, your instincts will tell you if someone is interested in taking care of your car or just taking care of your pocketbook.

I suggest:

- Motorcraft oil filter
- Castrol GTX 5w20 or Motorcraft 5w20.
(Synthetic Mobil 1 5w30 would be a good idea, too, but I usually wait until after 20k miles before switching to a full synthetic)

Opinions vary ALOT on when to switch over to synthetic, though. Some people switch sooner, some wait until later.

BTW. . .if you are having someone else change the oil and filter, be sure to inspect their work BEFORE you leave. I've heard the horror stories about stripping the oil drain plug, not changing the filter, or leaving the drain plug out completely.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the replies. One more question, and this might sound dumb, but how do you flush your old out when changing to a synthetic?

Flushing isn't mandatory but it's a good idea. Go to any of the auto parts stores and in the 'oils' section just look for a qt. can of eng. flush--there are several different makes but all of them are solvents of one type or another. Read the instructions but usually they will say " pour in qt. just before draining and let the eng. idle for 5 mins.--then drain." It just needs to circulate long enough to dissolve sludge, carbon, varnish, etc.

I normally don't 'flush' the old out. . .

Just change it 1st thing in the morning when it has had a long time to settle in the pan. Then let it drain for 1/2 hour or so so that as much old oil drains out as possible.

The full synthetics now are compatable with normal oils, so a complete system flush probably isn't necessary. Probably wouldn't hurt though. The major auto parts stores sell motor oil flush products if you want to do it.

Hope this helps,

I would flush it if your changing to a synthetic. I changed my oil to synthetic at 10 miles. No problems over 14,000 so far. Good luck. Dageon
