Question Police Laser Detector ???

Lots of people have been talking about the best radar detector, but what about laser ??? Around here the city cops use laser & photo radar, and the highway cops use radar.

I got pulled over last week by laser

So what works to detect it? I've read what the manufacturer's say but I'd rather hear from someone who uses it. Even on sites like radartest they focus way more on radar detection than laser performance.

Thinking about either V1 or Ecort 8500 if either of them is a decent laser performer

The problem with laser is its narrow physical operating band. Some detectors will pick up laser, but often it's too late

Like DB said,
The problem with Laser detectors is that once they go off it's too late, the cop already has you.

With laser, even with a Laser detector, you are screwed. The only way to really use the laser is if it shot at the car in front of you. and then you just get a warning. But if its pointed directly at you then your laser detector may just be telling you to pull over. Best option get a laser jammer, my friend has it and it works.

Radar & Laser detection work kinda the same. OK so I'm being liberal with that. But, the idea is that the noise (sound or light) coming from his gun. Now, Instant On Radar and Laser, if you're tagged your SOL. The other side, is that if the person in front of you is tagged, you pick up the 'splatter' from him and you detect it, and slow down. (If you don't, its your own fault). Thing is, Radar has ALOT of splatter, even if it is Instant On, it's there and you would/should detect it. Laser on the other hand is very, VERY narrow beam. IOW, not much splatter. And what there is, is very little. So the detector must be very sensitive to see it. And if it does, either you're zapped or a person VERY close is zapped.

Anyway, I had the same two choices you do. After reading everything, the reviews lead me that the direction arrows are nice but there are too many false alarms. And, $100 cheaper, I went with Passport 8500, and like it.

The city cops don't seem to use instant-on with their laser. They set it on a tripod hidden beside a busy road and keep it continuously on and then around the corner they have 5 carloads of cops all writing tickets.

Anyone been through a laser trap with the V1 or the Escort and get an idea how much warning you'd have if it was continuously on?

We don't have laser around here, but I got the Phantom II Radar & Laser Dector/Jammer. Works great with radar until you get within a couple hundred feet where the radar can break through, but laser is supposed to be jammed totally. You may also want to buy the license plate covers that deflect the laser too. Check out this site for some more info.

Add me to the list that says the phasar works. I've had one for at least 3 years and never got a ticket when it was turned on. I have come across state troopers while I was first in the fast lane at 85 when they shot me with instant on, never been pulled over. Unless you count the time when I was doing 120+ and the state trooper saw me pass the semi-truck like he was standing still. It must have took the trooper a while to get behind me and start the chase because after I saw him turn on his lights and start towards the freeway I turned it up and never saw him again.

My Escort 8500 has detected laser 2 times so far. Had it about 3/4 months so far.

ESCORT 8500

The car ahead of me was 'hit' with lazer and mine detected it about a mile ahead. The state trooper was in his car parked on an overpass at mile marker 138 on I-75, shooting northbound traffic. No problem for me that time.

The best defence is a CB radio. My antenna is mounted on the front bed lip with a quick-disconnect. The antenna goes in the cab for 1/4 mileing. The antenna cable fits thru one of the cab vents in the lower bottom of the cab. Turn the squelch up to block out distant chatter and noise but listen for the radar/accident reports. Might save your life.

Post Awareness

This is the 2nd post today of someone getting nicked...

Remember, you're in a high profile attention getter, so drive accordingly. Here's what you do. Find a Ch*vy, preferably one with a V8... get into the boost, make some noise, & goad them into passing you. Leave them there to get the tickets that YOU would otherwise get

RE: Laser - comments have been pretty close - LiDAR uses reflectvie spots on the front of your vehicle to obtain a speed rating. IT MUST be aimed, and used in good, bright weather conditions. This means there are no moving lidar units. Also, if you live in a mandatory front tag state, that is *exactly* where cops are taught to aim. Dark & lower profile vehicles register much later than white or light vehicles. Because cops aim primarily at the front tag (then the headlights) there are 2 things that can be done to reduce Lidar's effectiveness
1-one of those anti-lidar covers for your plate
2-the jammer unit that sits on top of your front plate assembly.
These I have seen favorable reviews on from Auto Sound & Electronics AND a show on The Learning Channel (of all things).

Lidar will work at long distances, and the plate cover reduces the reflection of 'usable light' to the lidar gun. The jammer does just the opposite, flooding it with light... on the TLC show, that lidar jammer worked from a distance of ??? down to something like 5' before a reading was obtained - repeatably. They even used it on a tractor trailer, but it was overcome because of the huge grill it had reflecting light...

The only radar jammer I've known of that worked was an active jammer, which would basically be illegal as a transmitter. I saw one article on it (Stealth?) and it allegedly worked - for 600 smackers, it had better... but not on Ka band radar... only X & K band.
