Custom Speaker Box

I designed this box for my truck, because I wasn't happy with whats available out there. Its designed to have enough room in the center to fit a descent size amp. I built, finished and hand painted it for about $30.00. Please tell me what you think. I'll post pics when I get it installed.

P.S. I know the speakers are kinda cheap.

Nice box. How much space is getting to the subs? If its not enough they sound pretty bad. I think its about .75 for tens. and bmwbig, i love your mods lol

The specs for the box is 50" wide by 11" at the bottom depth and 7" at the top, and 13" tall. It is then spit in the middle so that, well heres the drawing, and yes there is enough air space, I spent alot of time on the math. I believe its .8 somthing cubic feet.

Looks nice....wouldn't you want to carpet it though? I built custom boxes for one of my pickups and also an Iroc and was always told by the audio "experts" to carpet them. unless they're made out of fiberglass or something like that, the wood supposedly needs carpet for acoustics/absorbtion. Just a thought.
Also I always made sure I caulked the inner seams all around with some special stuff. I can't remember the type offhand, but I'm sure your local car stereo shop would be able to tell you.

I did caulk the inside with liquid nails, as well as all pieces before I screwed them together. I gave it a really nice catalized finish because im sick of the carpet look, plus I wanted to paint the lightning logo on the top as you see. I dont believe that carpet is used for sound purposes, but for appearence purposes. Thats why you use MDF board and caulk the inside so that its air tight. Which means the carpet does nothing. Besides the soft satin finish I put looks MUCH better than carpet, pictures dont do it any justice.

when i built mine i built 2 separate boxes with mtx 10's that were .78 cubic feet. Sealed w/ expanding foam sealant and then covered in like a felt'ish material. The amp fit nicely between them. I'll post pics later today

I used ..................5/8 mdf, I wanted to use 3/4 but then it took away from my cubic air space. You cant find 5/8 at your normal homedepot I believe they only carry 1/2....and.....3/4. My father has a cabinet shop, so I ordered it from where he gets his stuff.

blklightn,

Looks really good. I'm assuming that all of your measurements are the outside box dimensions, right? Also, are both speakers totally isolated from each other , or are they sharing the same airspace underneath the amp mounting space?

Yes those are the outside measurements, and yes the speakers are isolated from each other. Pretty much each speaker is in a box that is 18'w x 13"t x 11" bottom and 7" top. I just designed it to be one box, because it looks better and I wanted a nice area to mount the amp. Its raining over here but as soon as it stops and I can get installed Ill post pics.
