Adding boost is similar to increasing the compression ratio. The PCM expects to see about 8 lbs of boost at WOT. If you add "X" lbs of boost to that, the a/f ratios and timing will be too aggressive and things may/will go 'boom'!

I started this topic because I'm looking for performance upgrades that are less likely to void my warranty. I definitley need a little more performance...I had a 99 trans Am and 98 C5 vette before the lightning...both 6 speeds and they both felt a little quicker as far as SOTP. I know everybody says buy a chip and get the best bang for the buck, but then I hear of people having warranty issues once they have installed a chip. Basically I want as much performance as possible with minimal warrany issues. So any advice will be appreciated.

Seriously, though, I think you can safely run 1-2#'s of extra boost without a chip as Silver-Bolt mentioned, since the stock programming is pretty rich to begin with.

Everyone just assumes since we are adding a 2,4 or 6# pulley that are trucks are running way to lean without a reburn and will damage are motor but how many people actually know how much these pullies lean it out without a chip on stock computer i would say practically no one except the tuners or dyno junkies like myself that have done this many,many times.My opinion on this as far as air-fuel is concerned we are safe all the way up to a 6# pulley at least.When my truck was bone stock my air-fuel was around 11.6 and with the 2# on it jumped to 11.8 with the 4# on it was never more than 12.0 and the 6# did go up to 12.3 all with no chip and i have driven my truck during the winter months without a chip with many miles and never had detonation or any problems whatsoever!I would be alot more concerned with a 6# pulley and chip than a 6# pulley without a chip because of the added timing and higher shift points the chip gives you.There are alot of chips out there that guys are running that are alot leaner than 12.3 with the added timing and shift points with the bigger pullies!This is just my opinion on this because i see this all the time being brought up.

plus back in the day of my 89 supercoupe we used to spin the heck out of that blower with overdrive pulleys and didnt ever have a problem. I think (from my experience as a driveability tech) that if you put a pulley on with a stock PCM, and drive it "normally" for a few days, if it weren't able to trim the fuel ratio out ( keeping under 20% long term FT, other techs will understand this) the check engine light would come on due to the creeping long term trim. If the light doesnt come on, I would assume that the fuel system was able to compensate. I'm not a tuner, just a technician, so dont hold me to this, its just my theory.

Highroller and Silverbullet are right .The Mass-air meter WILL compensate for added air rushing by it.Thats what it does.It will add more fuel up to a point.Those air/fuel ratios Highroller mentioned sound right.Though,I'm not convinced that the aggresive timing of an aftermarket program is a real issue.With good fuel and no detonation, you should be in the safe zone.
