good question...
a bone stock 2001 M3 can run 4.6 seconds 0-60...
stock 1/4 mile runs under 13 seconds.
it will be close if he sucks at driving his M3. if he knows what he's doing you will most likely lose.
driver error is what it comes down to with this race. all you have to do is punch it (taking wheel slip into consideration of course)
you can search for "bimmer" and find an old M5 vs Lighting thread, and find that there was mixed opinions from L drivers. Well, the M3 is a little faster than the M5 in a straight line..
I say stock M3 wins vs the modded L.

'01 M3: 4.7sec 0-60, 13.3ish 1/4 mile time. Given from a good driver. Stock.
You should be in the mid 12's with what you have done to your 'L'. Maybe LOW 12's if you know what you're doing. I say it'll be close if you both know how to launch correctly. M3's have good traction. He might have you a bit off the line, but you should be able to get him in the long run. He's only got 269lbs torque with 333hp. It basically comes down to driver technique.

they are fast :O
But you should have no problem beating him into 2nd gear, They are fast off the jumps because of traction control, but when their VANOS system kicks in (like v-tec) those things will pull on you in 1st gear, its all about your launch, I beat one from a dead stop with my slicks So if you lay down some tread dont expect to beat it. If you chip is tuned right for your setup i think you should be able to beat him, i ended up beating him by almost 2 cars at 140. Give it a try ! Hell if you lose its still a 50,000 vehicle

don't spin and you should be fine. His car is much more prone to driver error then you are.
Plus I'm not sure about the M3's, but alot of the exotic and import cars get their best runs when they dump the clutch @ xxxxrpm's, which most people won't do on their expensive car. Does anyone know if the M3's fall into this catagory?

Has anyone here actually even driven the "new" M3's???????
If so, you'll know that you DON'T want to launch with Traction Control turned on. You'd also know that regardless of the M3's peak torque rating, they are torque monsters. Punch it at 1,000 rpms and the thing pulls like a tank all the way to redline. The mods in my sig have gotten me a 13.2 @ 105. The M3 will cross the quarter mile around 108mph given a great driver at around a similar # of 13.3. All that being said, this race should be very driver dependant but i would give it to the L in the quarter mile.
Here's what you do. Bet him "first one to 100mph" and you should win every time! (Just don't opt to try to hang with him in any other performance respect besides a run up to 100mph).

Run for fun. I have driven a 2001 M3 and a 2001 Z3-M-coupe. They run hard. I follow a couple of BMW boards and several are running in the 12's with very minor mods. With the speed limiter removed and a minor air box mod they are running top speeds right in the low 180's mph. As others have said, it takes much more skill to pilot one down the 1/4.
