Question 1st oil change, and guess what??? GRRRRRR

Okay guys, this really puzzles me and maybe you can help me out. I went ahead and did my first oil change today on my Lightning, to get that oil factory crap out of there since my Lightning has been sitting at the dealership for a while before I bought it last month. Anyway, I changed the oil today at 1600 miles using a Mobil 1 M210 oil filter, and 6 quarts of Motorcraft Super Premium 5w30($2.25 a quart at the dealership, I know it's a lot, but wanted to use motorcraft dino oil till I switch to synthetics later). Anyway, I prefilled the oil filter and everything during the oil change and made sure the oil was hot when I drained it. Now, everytime I fire my truck up, it makes this wierd hammering or knocking type noise during idle. It seems to go away after the engine warms up. Why in the world would my engine start making this noise right after it's 1st oil change? It doesn't sound damaging, but sounds annoying. I have read while doing a search that the noise will eventually go away after driving for several hundred miles on the new oil, but why does it do this?

Funny you mention that because I changed my oil today for the first time at 1200 miles (royal puprle 5W20) and my lightning makes a rattling noise at idle like what you descibe....happens at idle only while the truck is hot and does not go away. It sounds like a diesel almost. Anyone haver any idea what that is? I checked thenblower and idler pulleys and thats not it. It is predomint on the right side more...kind of underneath. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Question

Yes, that is exactly what it sounds like, and where it seems to be coming from! It's the most curious noise i've ever had as none of my previous vehicles have ever made any noises after an oil change.

Are your trucks 2002 models??

The original engine in my 2001, had the "(MARBLES IN A PAINT CAN)" rattle at start-up when brand new and we brought this up to the service dept immediately upon taking delivery. (Just for the record) With the noise getting worse, (At 27868 miles) we took the truck in to let them listen tuit again. Ultimately the engine was replaced.

Just one difference, from you two... that being the oil did not have to be changed for this engine noise to come about in my truck. It was audible from the first start up

OK, it looks like more 'marbles in the can' on the 02s. We really need to collect data on this to get to the bottom of it.

Roll call: who's got'em, who doesn't? I'll start.

Mine: no marbles

Hmmm...okay, now I'm worried. My truck was perfect until this oil change and that's what is weird. Even if this sound goes away, what the heck is it? It almost sounds like a bearing on one of the accesories hanging from the front of the motor but I can't seem to pinpoint it. I mean...I am using royal purple 5W20 which states right on the bottle that iit exceeds all Ford specs.

year: '02
build: February 02
current: 1200miles
oil change: 1200miles
oil type: Royal Purple 5W20
amount: 6.0 quarts
filter:Motorcraft FL-820s
prefilled filter: yes
mods at change: none

Hey lightningfun, I to have just hit 1000 miles. I'am going to do my first oil change this week. I see you used royal purple and thats what I was thinking of using also. Do you know where you can get it at a good price. And I sure hope I do not get this marbles in a can syndrome. I will be pretty pissed off if it happens. I cannot understand why this is happening and its not like its an isolated incident seems to be widespread. I will let you know what happens after the oil change. Like(snoopy)says this is something to keep tabs on. Dennis...................

Hey guys, I plan to change my oil on tuesday. I have 1,250 miles on my 2002. I plan to use Ford motorcraft super premium 5w-20 motor oil. I'm going to use Motorcrafts fl-820's filter. In the owners guide it says( if a replacement oil filter is used that does not meet Ford material and design specifications, start-up engine noises or knock may be experienced). But I see a couple of you did use motorcraft filters so who the heck knows!! I sure hope mine don't do this crap, I will post as soon as i change my oil. I hate that you guys are having this problem, hopefully we can figure this thing out.

ok, 1st off, i do not have an L, so please hear me out, second off its just a 4.6, but please hear me out...i see you all pre-fill your filters, i have never done this, i assume you just dump oil inot the filter and screw it on? therefore hastining the process of oil to the important parts of the engine? am i right? sems to be a common denominator of whats happening, think this could be a factor? maybe someone should try doing it with out prefilling and see, just my two cents. on my truxk i have never prefilled and have no problems with "marbles in a can", my dad's V-10 does on cold cold cold Pa winters with initiat start up, but goes away quickly...best of luck--medic

Do a search and you will come up with very descriptive posts regarding this issue. Here is my deal with it:

01 Lightning
Currently 7200 miles
1st oil change at 3000 miles with Mobil 5w30
Yes I got the rattle upon startup after my 1st oil change
Changed oil again with Motorcraft 5w20
Sound was still there
Changed oil again with Mobil 10w30
Sound was still there
All oil changes used exactly 6 quarts and prefilled filter
Took L to Ford they stated that the noise is normal even called SVT and asked their engineer about it, they said it is also normal
Dealer changed oil, not exactly sure what they used
Sound is unnoticable now

'02 here, when I went to Amsoil 5W30 at 1200 miles I noticed a bit more valvetrain noise, but no definite rattle. I can just hear some of the valve action, and even that has quietened (?) a lot in the past few thousand miles. Otherwise no startup rattle or anything of that sort.

Here is what I did! After I hit 500 miles I put in the PROLONG engine aditive. At 1000 miles I changed the oil and added the aditive again. Put in Mobil 1, 5W30 and motorcraft filter. I primed the filter and have never had the knock on start-up. I dyno'd the truck at 1200 miles and put out 355hp @ 423ft.lbs of torque. I ran a 13.53 @103mph stock. I have never had the knock.

I only fill to the halfway mark on the dip-stick. I have never put in 6qts. Coincidence? Someone else care to correlate on a 02 doing the same thing?
