Never, never, believe anything technical that you read on this board! I fact half the post must be in jest, I suspect. There just can’t be this many L owner that can’t find the gas cap.
Entertaining in a bizarre way, yes; masochistic, yes!

I here that !!!!
I did something really dumb the other day, I did a search on this board, looking for a part # for a 2000 Lightning crankshaft. I found the number and went down to the dealership and ordered it. They sent me a V6 crankshaft.....I got some funny looks from the parts peaple for this.
The good thing is, that it was a second attempt....the first time the dealership didn't have any luck either.
Wich brings up another point, If anybody wants or needs a new lightning crank and you order one, Ford may send you a casting. Do NOT accept it. You need a forging and there is a huge difference in price. A real lightning crank list for almost 640.00 or at least mine did

ALL 5.4's are IRON (Meaning that no 5.4's are Aluminum)
ALL 4.6's ARE aluminum EXCEPT for the 03 cobra, which is a 4.6 IRON block.
If you read what I originaly posted correctly, thats what I said.

Now...since I did miss read your post...I'll correct myself...but yet...continue to flame you for passing bad information.....the 4.6's in both my blown 96 Bird and my 95 Cougar are Iron. So null the "all aluminum" comment. The original motor in the 96 had an iron block and the current motor out of a 99GT also has an iron block. So NO....not all 4.6s other than the 03 have aluminum blocks.
Sorry for misreading the origional post.

If you say that your 95 and 96 had an iron block, I believe you, BUT are you sure the 99's had an iron block?
From what I understand the 4.6's have been aluminum for quite some time, not too long after they started making the 4.6.
Just trying to get the facts straight, 'cause if you dont, someone is right there to tell you otherwise.

Every 2V 4.6 has been iron with the exception of the 02 Explorer.
Every 4V 4.6 has been aluminum with the exception of the 03 Cobra.

Whew!! This post went ALL sorts of out of whack
All 5.4 blocks are iron.
All 2V 4.6 blocks are iron, except for the new Explorer.
All Cobra 4.6 blocks are aluminum except for the 2000 R and the 03.
All 4V Mark 8 blocks are aluminum.
And getting back to the original question asked, the blocks are the same between the Lightning and the regular 5.4. All Triton truck 5.4s use the same crank, block, and rods, with the piston being the difference for lower compression on the Lightning. Ford changed the part number on the 01 blocks, I've heard some rumors that it had deeper cylinder skirts, but I have 99-00 and 01 blocks here and have not been able to measure or visually see a difference. Aside from that, Ford has replaced the 01 block part number with the previous 99-00 number.
Hope this helps.
