cam question 93 Lightning.

Hey guys....

Will this work????

roller lifters from 5.0 stang, correct length pushrods.
spider hold down from 5.0, holes already in block valley.
E303 roller cam with 1.6 bolt down roller rockers????????

Sounds like it will work.

thanks.

93 blocks are not roller ready, if you want to do a roller cam you'll have to tap the lifter valley for the spider, and get a customer small base circle roller cam. You won't be able to use the E cam, and I really don't suggest any of the motorsport cams because they hurt low end torque. You will also either need mass air, or a good custom chip (I can do that for you) because the speed density PCM will give you drivability problems with the cam.

Midway through the 93 model year, they started putting "roller ready" blocks in the 93 model trucks! You'll have to check the casting # on the block to be sure.

The # is located in behind the starter. It's tough to see, but you can see it without removing it! If it starts out with a F4TE , you have a roller block!

I have a 93, and mine is roller.

Sal, I believe he has a roller block already, cause he mentioned his holes were already there in the valley. If so everything above he mentioned will work.

As for the cam, I do agree esp. in a pig like a Lightning. As for a lower weight Mustang w/ a manual, I think an E or F would be a great choice for an entry level cam.

I know for a fact, mine is roller, b/c I already put a Comp Cam
in it about 6000 miles ago.

Where can I locate a custom cam without messing with mass air,
or a custom chip????? anybody know???

thanks...

If you have the F4TE block, then what you will need is the 5.0 roller lifters, spider, and retainers, a steel distributor gear (bronze works too, but wears out quick) conversion pushrods (from motorsport) and the cam. I suggest getting a custom grind done by any of the major cam companies, they will give you an info sheet to fill out.

I also strongly suggest getting adjustable rockers, because I've done many roller conversions where even though the right pushrods were used, we had to do a lot of rocker shimming to get the correct preload. Adjustable rockers will eliminate that headache.

Sal I really don't want to spend an arm & a leg, b/c
I have an 11 second Cobra for that..haha.

If I bought the Downs Ford complete kit for $599, milled the
heads 30-60, what would you charge to do a chip, that
would make it work without mass air???? Is it worth it????

If I run 14.4 now, what might I expect then??????

thanks, I can't believe I got so many responses so quick...

I had the Downs kit in my 95, with the Lunati 512 cam. I wasn't overly impressed. I made more power with the now defunct A332 cam. Keep in mind that you really won't spend all that much more getting a custom grind done. Roller cams are around $225-$250 off the shelf anyway, and custom ones are just a few bucks more. I had the valve train problem using the Downs kit (had nothing to do with Downs, it was just their kit) and had to shim the hell out of our own truck's rockers, so I just said screw it and got the Crane "cobra" rockers. A single program chip from me is $255. Honestly, if you are not looking to spend a lot of money, forget about doing the roller, it's not worth the expense for what you want. Crane makes a flat tappet cam just for the Lightning that works with the Speed Density, and gives a noticable increase. That is what I'd suggest you get and save yourself a $550 roller kit.

thanks for all of your help, I should just get rid of the dam truck.

I put the Comp Cam in and didn't really notice any difference,
and I thought it had better numbers than the Crane????

I picked up about .07 & .8 mph at the track, and it ran good.
The only thing was is chattered for about 2 minutes after cold
startups. So I pulled the .030 shims out and it acted like it
was holding the valves open at 4000-on intermittently???

Now the cam is wiped out again, well not wiped out, just has
a dead miss on a cylinder and the leak down says it's not the
valves, head or rings????

My mechanic is going to triple check that it is the cam, then
I guess for easiness & expense, I will either get the Crane or
another Comp??????

I wonder if I cut the heads 30 if it would pick up much, being it
has such low compression anyway????

You know it really pisses me off that Ford, for whatever reason
didn't make Gen 1 Lightnings roller. As many regular vehicles
that came thru roller in those years......

Oh well thanks for your support & tech advice..
