urgent engine oil question

ok i know this is a stupid question and i shouldn't even be able to own a L for asking but....

the dipstick for the engine oil shows my level at "min"..below all the xxxxx grooves...but my engine oil light doesnt come on...so when does it come on? and should i refill my engine oil or is it not a problem....was it just not filled enough when it left the dealership? (i have 500 miles on it now)...and also what should i refill with...meaning what original oil does the L use? i need brand, weight and everything..

also, is it alright to switch to mobil 1 synth at 500 or 600 miles or should i wait a bit? and should i switch the oil filter as well? whats the best brand? i hear purolator 820S is awesome...any opinions?

just wanna be safe with everything...

thanks for bearing with me!

dont switch to syntheitc for at least 2000 miles. most people wait for 5000. fill up with 5w20 or 5w30. go with the motocraft(ford) non-synthetic. fill it up untill it says full. if you are at min you should fill up before you do anything else....

There is no check oil light that I'm aware of. When you change the oil and filter replace with exactly 6 qts. It should be 1/2 way between min and max. Do NOT fill to the max line. Every 5.4(even N/A versions) that I've seen show the level in the middle when they are full. Overfilling can result in foaming and loss of oil pressure and performance. It sounds like yours is where it needs to be. Some cars come from the factory with the Mobile 1 in them so it's debateable on how long if ever to wait. I waited 2,000 before changing and went to the Mobile 1. Purolater makes the Ford filter BTW.

The only questions that are stupid are the ones that never get asked.

Can't say that I looked when changing the oil, but if there is a low level warning light, it'll be triggered by a sensor right in the side of the oil pan w/a wire coming out of it.

Only 5 1/2-6 qts--no more! As said, 'full' on our engs/dip sticks is about mid-way between the max and the min marks.

I changed oil at 1,000 miles using Motorcraft 5W20 and their filter. At 4,000 miles, I changed to Royal Purple's synthetic 5W20 #11 Racing oil and a K&N Gold filter. Never had a noise or useage problem--now at 31,600 miles.

In general the lights show low oil pressure not the amount of oil in the pan.

If you change your oil do not fill more to make dipstick read max. Put in 6 qts and thats all. If you put more you may ingest more oil.

From the replies in this thread you should be halfway between min and max.
